The Honorable Christopher Smith
Dear Sir
I wanted to remind you of what you wrote on your smith4nj.com webpage;
“In order to tangibly honor our veterans, I authored 13 new laws—all signed by President Bush—to establish new programs for the homeless veterans, a 60% increase in the GI bill for education, and expanded health care for disabled vets. I have always believed that even with limited federal resources, our veterans and their families deserve first crack as our first priority at federal resources. They have put their lives on the line for our freedom they deserve the respect and support of a grateful nation.”
I want to thank you for your previous concern and consideration of our wounded Veterans as they return home from the Middle East, but I was very troubled by what I read today. Apparently, because of your concern for our wounded Veterans, you were removed as Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs. Because you were “too concerned” for our Veteran’s welfare you let yourself be removed without a fight, and stayed silent on the problems only now coming to light.
Why did you find it a better choice to remain silent and “take one for the team” than stand up for our Veterans? And the budget submitted by President Bush cuts Veterans benefits yet again. I am a life-long resident of NJ, and as A Democrat, I would never even think of voting for you. But what’s right is standing up for our Veterans and SUPPORTING them. The Republican Party is always claiming our party doesn't, something your party loves to rub in our faces everyday. But it's obvious your declarations of support for our Veterans is simply window dressing for the media.
Shame on you. You don’t deserve to represent the fine people of New Jersey
Sincerely,
