David Broder thinks Bush is poised for a comeback --
WP: Bush Regains His Footing
By David S. Broder
Friday, February 16, 2007; Page A23

It may seem perverse to suggest that, at the very moment the House of Representatives is repudiating his policy in Iraq, President Bush is poised for a political comeback. But don't be astonished if that is the case.

Like President Bill Clinton after the Democrats lost control of Congress in 1994, Bush has gone through a period of wrenching adjustment to his reduced status. But just as Clinton did in the winter of 1995, Bush now shows signs of renewed energy and is regaining the initiative on several fronts.

More important, he is demonstrating political smarts that even his critics have to acknowledge.

His reaction to the planned House vote opposing the increase he ordered in U.S. troops deployed to Iraq illustrates the point.

When Bush faced reporters on Wednesday morning, he knew that virtually all those in the Democratic majority would be joined by a significant minority of Republicans in voting today to decry the "surge" strategy.

He did three things to diminish the impact of that impending defeat....

23. David Broder, just another sobersides tilting towards the right.
Edited on Fri Feb-16-07 04:51 PM by liberaldemocrat7
David Broder and George Will would like to use their elitist sober voice to trick you into believing the right wing junk they're about to spout as fact.

I call this lying with a straight face or attempting to use a calm voice to lie.

George W bush will never look as good as Harry Truman. Harry Truman, at least wanted to pass compassionate domestic legislation blocked by the do nothing Republican congress. George W bush wanted to destory the new deal and the fair deal with his Republican Raw Deal.

24. Great minds think alike!
I was thinking the exact same thing when I read his column today. He had a gallon of freeper-flavored Kool-aid for breakfast.

Maybe he's getting really senile. Even some of the hard-core Bush supporters I work with are jumping ship. Now is not the time to get on the Bush Titanic.

3. This biggest difference that I can see is people didn't care if Clinton
had a blow job, or lied about it. People DO care that Bush has lied about just about every single thing from using Orwellian language with his domestic policies to ordering the Nation's military into war and jeopardizing us for generations.

People want Bush/Cheney taken to task and held accountable.

17. Geez, that's just plain scary....
There's a reason his critics haven't acknowledged his political smarts -- he's dumb as a sack of doorknobs. He's going to "stay the course" until he gets impeached.

14. Broder suffers from contrarianism as does Chris Matthews. When something becomes painfully obvious
to everyone, he feels the need to take a contrarian stance to make himself feel relevant. After all, there aren't many columns over the next 2 years in "Bush is still a failed president". But a "Bush comeback column" followed by a "Bush comeback falters" column a year later is two columns that he otherwise would not have.

Looks from here like he's the same drunken, partisan, corrupt loser that he's been for the last 50 years.

This is the same Broder who said that wes Clark is unqualified to talk about military issues.

It's clear his escalation plan is bound for failure. I don't know how he'll find any success between now and January 2009 when our new President is sworn in!!

19. Broder is a good example of why the MSM punditacracy is irrelevant
He says little in a thousand words. The idea the Senate is at odds with the House because the Senate approved Bush's nominee to direct the escallation isn't "regaining the initiative"; it's being silly.

30. This is how it will begin:
An article here, an article there. News reports the surge may already be working. As seen on ABC earlier this week. Also, on CNN's Situation Room, and Rueters News reporting surge maybe working....But, what I am afraid might happen here is a decrease in violence will be seen as Bush's plan working but in reality, this so called "surge" of 21,000 just happens to coincide with the time of the year in Iraq when violence traditionally wanes. So unless the increase is a colossal failure ( i.e., actually manages to reverse the usual trend of decreased attacks) we won't even know if it worked until I guess maybe the summer/fall of this year. Also, by launching this escalation at a time of year during which violence traditionally ebbs anyway, this decrease in violence may create the false impression that the "new surge" strategy is working. This I hope the news media does not fall for and report it as such. But it seems like it has already started.

This is when folks should write their papers or call the tv stations, or contact Congress. If nothing is ever said about this then one day we will awaken to a poll by CNN/USA/Gallup and Wall Street Journal polls and Bush is 54% approval and 60% approve of his handling the war in Iraq and the Dems are seen as losing the House and the Senate....

I seem to recall video that looked like upstate New York, except the "snow" was tan.

Not much moved, and the moving machines were worn down very, very quickly by the sand.

the sheep, and he will, that's who he play to, he knows he can continue his wars for profit...That's ALL that matter to him...corporate profits...The Dems just don't get it...His wars will continue to hes long gone out of office and that's the plan..big profits...A world war...Hmmm.... and pappy s Carlyle Group will do well...The puppets job is to keep it going...And he will...with bullshit surges and whatever else, more money for Afghanistan...it'll just keep rolling, or the dollar will crash.
