If Obama runs he better have more media savvy than recently shown.
When he announced he was running for president he did it on a Saturday--the absolutely worst day that one can announce IF one wants to be covered by the MSM. Unless, of course, not being covered early is some tactic that he has on purpose.

1. Wow, you couldn't be more wrong. Saturday leads into the Sunday talk shows.
Of which all of them were talking about Obama.

15. Most of those shows have agendas already lined up
You can look in the tv guide or the tivo guide for (for example) Meet the Press and the guests and topics are already listed. There is an extremely brief intro to news at the beginning but that is it. This is the case with most of the talk shows except for perhaps Last Word on CNN.

Bush ALWAYS waits until Saturday to release bad news but releases good news on Mondays or Tuesdays.

2. He was covered by the MSM. I am not sure where you have been, but the media
have shown his announcement again and again and again.

And he was on 60 minutes on Sunday, after that.

3. Sigh...you are aware of the Sunday morning talk circuit?
Saturday was a great day to announce for two reasons

1) Being an off day ensured a large crowd

2) Just in time for the Sunday monring talk shows to salivate over him and positions his announcement as the news leading off the week.

4. That "news dump" thing doesn't work with huge stories...
in fact, annoucning on Saturday allows the story to get in the Sunday paper -- which is more widely read than the weekday ones. It also means he'll be the subject of debate on all the Sunday political news shows.

The news dump is only when you have to put out news that you don't want anyone to see. If you're putting out a story with a lot of fanfare -- as with this one -- it doesn't work the way it usually does.

18. Yes
A couple of people protested against the war in Iraq, against the only Presidential front runner who has always opposed the war. Seemed kinda stupid, in my opinion.

6. IF??? -- you're kidding right?
Hello, he is running, there is no "if" about it.
I don't think he's going to need to worry too much one way or the other about the MSM paying attention to him.

7. And on Saturdays, young folks aren't in school and can attend with
their parents an event downtown in Springfield where another tall president-to-be made his announcement.

Media savvy? I think Obama's team looks pretty sharp.

He'll have ample support nationally, and will have earned it. We've got a great handful of Democrats seeking the top job. If my first choice doesn't win the nomination, I'm supporting whoever does.

If that is Barack Obama, more power to him, and may he kick Republican butt in 2008.

8. And Hillary announced on a .... Saturday
Edwards announced in Christmas/New Years week. Are they dumb?

After Hillary, I heard comments on how smart this was - more people could watch it and it was covered on all the Sunday shows.

21. Yes, and I think celebrities will sway voters more than politicians
If Oprah gets some kind of celebrity machine going in support for Obama, I think voters will pay more attention to that than they will other politicians.

10. What? He had wall to wall coverage Saturday, Sunday, AND Monday.
What channel are you watching, what newspaper are you reading, and what website is your favorite? It was a non-stop lovefest for Obama, and they even decided to overlook a mistake he made, so to say he has no media savvy (or at least that the media loves him, unconditionally, seemingly) is just not based in fact. Btw, Hillary announced on a Saturday, too.

16. I know. But most tv talk shows (e.g. Meet the Press)
already of set their agendi by the weekend. And people do other things than watch the news on the weekend. You may or may not have noticed that Bush always announces bad news on Saturday and good news during the week, usually on Monday.

11. The guy is oozing media savvy
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 02:09 PM by Strawman
What he needs are people who knnow how to play the game that will help him from being thwarted at every turn if he manages to get elected.

Not having enough media celebrity is about the least of his worries. He's charismatic and a natural political celebrity. You don't go from freshman Senator to top tier Presidential candidate without knowing how to effectively use the media.

14. I support everyone in the beginning of the primaries.
I gradually make up my mind by watching and listening to what they say. Then I throw my support behind someone. Having said that, I do worry about Obama's lack of experience, especially in the international domain.

17. Umm what are you talking about...
The guy seems to be doing well with the media so far. Two best selling books, essentially 2 announcements for his Presidential bid which garnered PLENTY of media attention. A 60 Minutes spot after his "formal" announcement. An amazing announcement speech. And the latest polls showing him closing in on Clinton already! Yeah, you're right, the guy clearly has no idea what he is doing!
