Media Matters hits Michelle Malkin's hate-filled rhetoric. Also McCain's staff.
They point out that Malkin was dropped by a VA paper for her hate-filled talk.

I think habitually mistakes shrill for thought-provoking and substitutes screaming for discussion. She's an Asian Ann Coulter. I also think that, like Coulter, she says outrageous things just to get TV appearances and book deals. She's the worst of what's wrong with punditry today. She adds absolutely nothing to genuine political discourse.

Then they cut to the events about Edwards, pointing out that they ignored the right wing hatred.

As Media Matters for America noted, Malkin herself has been chastised for extreme, hate-filled writing. In 2004, the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot dropped Malkin's syndicated column, describing her writing as "seemingly mean-spirited rantings." A Virginian-Pilot columnist wrote that Malkin "habitually mistakes shrill for thought-provoking and substitutes screaming for discussion," that she represents "the worst of what's wrong with punditry today," and that she "adds absolutely nothing to genuine political discourse." Malkin has a history of launching ad hominem attacks on Democrats, such as her utterly baseless allegation on the August 19, 2004, edition of MSNBC's Hardball that one of Sen. John Kerry's (D-MA) war injuries might have been an intentionally "self-inflicted" wound.

As Media Matters documented, on February 7, The New York Times and the Associated Press reported criticism by Catholic League president Bill Donohue that Marcotte and McEwan are "anti-Catholic, vulgar, trash-talking bigots," without noting Donohue's own history of vulgar, trash-talking bigotry -- or of Donohue's decision to dismiss anti-Catholic bigotry on the part of Jerome Corsi, a key anti-Kerry operative in 2004. Media Matters has also noted that the media largely ignored the controversy behind McCain's hiring of Hynes, who failed to disclose his employment with McCain's campaign even though he posted several blog entries praising McCain as a presidential candidate and attacking McCain's rivals.

NY Times, AP reported Donohue's criticism of Edwards campaign bloggers -- but ignored Donohue's own controversial comments and inconsistent outrage.

Oh, did Donohue say he was going to use the NYT for his diatribe against John Edwards? Oh, yes he did, didn't he. Interesting.

http://mediamatters.org/items/200702070005

In 2004, Media Matters first detailed anti-Catholic comments made by Jerome Corsi, who, as co-author of Unfit for Command (Regnery, 2004), was one of the ringleaders of the smear campaign by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth against Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) -- a Catholic presidential candidate. Among Corsi's bigoted comments:

CORSI: "So this is what the last days of the Catholic Church are going to look like. Buggering boys undermines the moral base and the laywers rip the gold off the Vatican altars. We may get one more Pope, when this senile one dies, but that's probably about it."
CORSI: "Boy buggering in both Islam and Catholicism is okay with the Pope as long as it isn't reported by the liberal press."
Corsi also called Islam "a worthless, dangerous Satanic religion," and a "cancer that destroys the body it infects" and claimed of Muslims: "RAGHEADS are Boy-Bumpers as clearly as they are Women-Haters -- it all goes together."

Talk about hate? Talk about controversial?

This is who is planning to take down of our Democratic candidates who refused to bend knee to his request to fire the bloggers

The worst part is the ones here at DU defending him.

Malkin and other blogs are starting after Dean and the DNC now for allowing a muslim to lead the prayer at the meeting. Do a search on Imam Husham Al-Husainy. We stand up or we lose our freedom to bigots.

5. Show me ONE poster here in any thread who defended Donohue or his
organization. The Catholic League is a bunch of morons.

But for Edwards to have hired those bloggers without vetting them properly was dumb, and for him to retain them now was even dumber.

Oh, I see -- anti-Catholic bigotry is fine. But of course we don't believe in anti-Islamic bigotry. That's a completely different thing, right?

:sarcasm:

You have given Donohue great credence here today.

9. I can read the bloggers statements for myself and make my own
judgments, as I did. Like many other Catholics, I am offended. I don't need Bill Donohue to tell me what to think.

Edwards has stupidly handed this issue to Donohue -- a man who had practically no influence among the large majority of Catholics until now -- and now he'll have to live with it.

Fortunately, there are a number of other excellent candidates out there. Edwards can go back home to his 30,000 sq. foot pad in N.C.

(I can't believe I was on here defending him for that, by the way.)

10. Just wondering. . .
do you think they brainwashed Will Pitt, too? He's not a Catholic, and he acknowledged today that the comments were "goddamn insulting."

14. I thought the comments were gd funny--and Pitt admitted the "snark"
was right on.

There are a lot of people in this country who continue to believe
the earth is about 6000 years old (look at the recent Grand Canyon controversy)
in the face of incontrovertible scientific evidence. If we had the bones of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, we could test the DNA. Since we don't and we can't, the story of the Immaculate Conception becomes one of faith. THERE IS NO WAY TO PROVE who was the father of Jesus. It becomes a matter of faith.

So, you are entitled to believe what you will and I'm entitled to believe what I will. Sometimes people make funny comments about people's beliefs.
Toughen up. Believe me, I've been made fun of lots of times (I happen to believe in the presence of energy after death--which some call ghosts--and some call the soul) and my husband ridicules me every time I open my mouth on that--but it hasn't changed my beliefs.

Remember the old "sticks and stones may break my bones" from childhood?
My advice? Don't let the bloggers get to you. Laugh with them. They'll respect you for it.

13. No kind of bigotry is right
What those two wrote was well before the campaign. They are not his advisors, they not running for public office, and they will not be up for cabinet positions.

8. Wow.. I didn't even know she had a column in papers! The rightie they publish here...

..in Anchorage (Syndicated) is Cal Thomas. But they always have someone with a progressive piece on the same page!

Someone wrote into our paper TODAY complaining about Cal Thomas.. so I can only imagine how they would stand a hate monger like Malkin!

Cal Thomas, tirade-writer supreme, is master in art of yellow journalism

Cal Thomas is described in his byline as "a nationally syndicated columnist." How sad. For years I have read his columns, which amount to pontifical pronouncements on issues far and wide, all cast as definitive and authoritative, at least from his far-right political and editorial agenda.

His Jan. 30 column in the Daily News ("Crowd that turned out to march against Iraq war a bunch of aging, selfish hippies") sinks to an already low standard of credibility. His description of the crowd that turned out to march against the Iraq war as a bunch of aging, selfish hippies and his scathing denigration of those whose opinions and actions are not in accord with his own biases, convictions and opinions is now a matter of record. Tirades from the press are nothing new. I am old enough to recall such tirades as "yellow journalism," journalism that exploits, distorts or exaggerates the news to create sensations and attract readers. Thomas is a master of the art.

15. The right wing media smear machine went after Edwards--and DU helped!
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 12:21 PM by McCamy Taylor
Sorry if some posters noses get put out of joint, but it is true. You ignored the fact that every network news had the same stupid story about how Edwards had hired Catholic haters running more or less simulataneously and instead, you responded to rumors spread by whom? bloggers working for the right wing (just like Michelle Malikin works for the right wing) maybe who started posting all over DU talking about Edwards house, the hair video, how they were for him but now they are against him, how he is nothing but a phony, blah, blah, blah.

It was a thinly veiled attempt to drive a wedge between Edwards and the core Democratic base being conducted as a side operation as of a larger political smear campaign to drive a wedge between a southern Baptist candidate and the Catholic community (important to Democrats trying to win the nomination).

And a surprising number of people posting here fell for it.

I am not going to play nice. Some people here need to study Nixon era politics and learn how he use to conduct dirty tricks so that they are prepared for how the real world of politics operates. And for you people who think that no one sees through your phony posts and your pretend "I was for Edwards until he bought that big house blah, blah, blah..." you are so transparent.

Divide and Conquer. It is the most important tool in the arsenal of any fascist party's campaign strategy. Get to know it. Get to recognize its scent, its footprints. When you see DU explode like it did two nights ago---when DU should have been outraged that Edwards was the target of a stupid right wing smear but instead a bunch of posters were making sure that Edwards was the one people were getting outraged at --know that DU is being attacked.

Politics is a tough business.

End of rant.
