What common-use terms just piss you off ....... ?
Having lived the last six years, along with all of you, on the wrong side of the Looking Glass, some of the terms in common useage have really touched my last nerve. They've either turned draconian or they're simply silly. They are used to frighten, to control, to posture, and to paint images favorable to the cabal.

Please use this thread to vent a little.

Here are some of mine ...........

As you read these, please note that I am not intending to attack or diminish in any way the people who might be represented by these terms. My issues are simply with the terms - the words - themselves, and those who have prostituted them.

"Security" - to mean it means some thuggish looking bastard in a black t-shirt. The word evokes in me a feeling of being less safe, not more. I would be thrilled not to be so 'secure'. It also means have to drag out your drivers license to do anything from open a bank account to enter a public building. All the airport hassles these days just plain piss me off. I do NOT feel more safe having been frisked and patted down. All this public posturing where WE THE PEOPLE are treated as crime suspects serves no purpose beyond reminding us of who are Daddy (supposedly) is.

"The Troops" - a term that held sway and evoked reverence and respect in the righteous days of WW2, ever since they equated it with the wishes of the shithead who squats at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, it is just jingoistic bullshit. Corollary terms are 'wear the uniform', 'our brave young men and women', and so forth.

"In harm's way" - if this were associated with the people who inhabit our economically abandoned cities, I might feel better about it. If it were meant to evoke images of our senior poor, trying to survive on cat food purchased from a paltry fixed income, I might feel better about it. If it was talking about every driver who crosses a failing highway bridge twice a day on his way to and from work, it might be meaningful. Instead, it is just so much more jingoistic bullshit.

"Terror" - terror is not the worry about the remote chance you'll be met with a crazed middle easterner with a bandolero of C-4 strapped to his chest. Terror is a single mom with a CP afflicted kid and no health insurance. Hell, terror might even be an impoverished migrant worker with a couple of kids, no permanent home, and no money for Christmas presents.

"Conservative" - what the fuck do they think they're conserving????

Those are just a very tiny sampling of some of my personal biggies .... what are yours?

3. That's my NUMBER ONE.
Ugh, I just hate that. If we could erase it from our lexicon, I would be happy.

12. Its funny ....
... I agree totally that this, and its first cousin, "The Heartland", may be the worst of them all, but I've found a way to ignore it. I've trained myself to instantly translate it to 'Faterland' said in my best Arte Johnson voice. That's makes it, to me, tolerably silly.

19. Freedoms - the plural use of.
I don't like the concept that implies it's to be parceled out in pieces, to be picked over & bartered like fruit in a market.

I want freedom, not bits & pieces of it doled out at whim.

A close second:

Homeland. Didn't we fight a war w/someone that used that same name for his country?! (I don't lose ... just invoked the concept, not the word!)

And hearing them both hammered into the daily lexicon, where they didn't reside before the gop takeover, just makes me INSANE!

I'm done now.
Thanks for the release ... it felt rather nice! O8)

20. One that usually gets to me
is "concerned". Any time a group calls itself the "Concerned Women" of whatever, or "Citizens Concerned" about whatever, it usually means they want to prevent some other group from exercising their own rights
to whatever behavior the "concerned" people oppose. Because they are "concerned", they want to eliminate a woman's right to choose, or the rights of gays to marry, or kids to be able to read "Harry Potter", or enforcing the separation of church and state.

They always try to make it seem that they are not REALLY hypocrites, just..."concerned". They want to protect each and every fetus, heterosexual marriage, Christianity, and the absolute right to determine what our kids learn in school. Evolution? They are "concerned" that we are teaching kids to ignore their own beliefs. So along with the others I've seen here, "concerned" really irks me.

Funny, though, but among things they are NOT "concerned" about, is letting people enjoy equal rights, the bloodshed in Iraq, and whether have enough to eat, or access to medical care. No "concern" from them there.

22. "Values."
Most people using that term to describe petty, bullshit and just flat-out wrong opinions and prejudices they have wouldn't be able to comprehend what a true and valid value is if it were sitting on their ugly, ignorant faces.
