Sen.Richard Burr (R-NC) knows where you can get full health insurance for $63 a month
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 01:49 PM by underpants
Either that or C-Span is running a looong commercial for the Christian Children's Fund.

Burr says that for only $2.10 a day ONLY TWO DOLLARS A DAY a minimum wage worker (why just them?) can get full insurance. That works out to $63 a month.

Of course he also says that a minimum wage worker (only them?) can get full health coverage of $4,300 a year.

Apparently it is both.

Of course earlier he said that a minimum wage worker (1 job no overtime) makes $10,000 a year (no taxes in calculation).

So according to one of his figures there is nothing strange about spending 43% of your income on health insurance. Since when is it the business of the federal government to tell you how to spend your hard earned dollars?

Now he is talking about how health care can encourage kids to stay in school.

"but he's not going give me a vote. Waaah.

Why. Why Why Did my fellow NC folks vote for this loser?

on edit: I think I'm gonna watch "The People's Court" instead of the rest of this speech. it'll make more sense, anyway. :eyes:

11. I just love his "common sense" discussion of negotiating with that $500 more
Wooo those insurance company sales reps probably won't see THAT coming

:eyes:

He seems to think (IT IS SO SIMPLE!) that small businesses can negotiate for no copay and no deductible for something that is close to really being affordable.

The problem isn't the negotiating or the crumbs of money it is that insurance is outrageously too expensive and it is increasing at a rate off the charts.

His points about prevention and wellness are correct but those aren't free.

3. OK, he knows what insurance costs for a healthy male
20 year old who accepts a high deductible and high copays. He's still not going to be able to afford it out of a slave wage that doesn't even cover basic living expenses.

He obviously has no clue what insurance costs people over 50 and anyone with a pre existing condition. The last time I checked, it was over $1000/month for me, nearly twice my mortgage payment. That was 4 years ago.

It's overprivileged morons like this one that we've been fighting my whole life who ASSume a wage under subsistence can be saved for retirement and will cover cheap health insurance and who ASSume that insurance premiums for a 20 year old male in perfect health apply to all of us.

They also conveniently forget OASDI deductions on that minimum wage paycheck, 40% of which are robbed to pad the general fund, used just like income taxes would be. There are no deductions for OASDI and no hope of a refund.

I'm beginning to think money is a toxic substance that kills brain cells. People who have always had more than enough of it turn awfully stupid and awfully callous.

24. No no no that is for insurance equal to what a US Senator gets
uh-huh

You should have heard him reading the stats on how many people who are uninsured actually work. He was shocked that it was 80% or at least he repeated it because he wasn't sure he said it correctly. Then he went on to read about how many families actually work and one of them only makes minimum wage or something like that.

I know there are poor people in NC I have been there.

4. He's an idiot.
I don't know how NC manages to elect the biggest bunch of puckered up fools to congress. I've lived here my entire life, and for every John Edwards we elect, it seems that there are 2 Jesse Helms. Perhaps that's not accurate, but it sure is the way it seems.

6. I was hoping someone else was watching this
I am gobsmacked at the crap spewing from this guys oral orifice. I am getting really, really angry watching this slick piece of filth strut his stuff - does he get 'forever' to make his point? where are the rebuttals?

The $4300 only covers the individual, as he points out, so where does the 'happy, healthy family' delusion fit in.

Also, does anyone know at what income level does medicare/medicaid phase out?

Will he ever shut up and sit down??

14. But as Kennedy said yesterday...
the 70+ ammendments they have attached to the Minimum Wage Bill is 'filibustering by ammendment'. If each one gets as much time wasted on it as this one, they'll never get to vote on the bill itself.

Anyone else have the sense that Burr has begun a filibuster of the minimum wage bill? Didn't reid go on the
senate floor prior to burr invoking some sort of cloture vote?

I'll bet it's $2500 or more.

That's how these cheapo health insurance plans get you. Low monthly payment=skyhigh deductible.

30. That's the beauty of it-there is none!!
Seriously he had it all figured out how employers who didn't offer health insurance will now be able to offer it IF they minimum wage isn't raised AND with that extra $500 (?) be able to negotiate a no co-pay no deductible deal.

Amazing.

25. I just called his office...
And politely, but angrily told his staffer who answered the phone that perhaps he should come to my county and tell it to his constituents who were out of work from their jobs being outsourced, and were having their homes forclosed because they couldn't pay their mortgage. I said that while Burr was shilling for the insurance corps who made 40 billion in profits, I'd be passing on what he had to say to every person I knew, and when he comes up for re-election I'd be reminding everyone what he said and what he stood for.

Then I politely thanked the young man for his time, and for passing on the message...and then I hung up.

I am so pissed at these people.
