Edwards and Giuliani lead way in Iowa race
Edwards and Giuliani lead way in Iowa race
By Mark Tran--The Guardian
Thursday, January 25, 2007

----
Senator John Edwards leads his fellow Democrats in the Iowa caucus - the first test in the US presidential race - while Rudolph Giuliani is the Republican frontrunner, a poll revealed today.
According to the Real Clear Politics blog, Mr Edwards, John Kerry's running mate in the 2004 White House election, is comfortably in front with 25% of the vote.
Barack Obama, the rising star of the Democratic party, has 17% and is followed by Tom Vilsack, the state's governor until last week (16%), and Hillary Clinton (15%).
(...)
In the Republican camp, Mr Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, holds a 25%-21% lead over Senator John McCain. Other polls indicate that Mr McCain is suffering from his strong support for military escalation in Iraq.
Political pollster Rasmussen Reports this week said Mr McCain would be beaten by Mr Obama or Mr Edwards should he face either of them in a presidential vote. Until now, he would have beaten anyone fielded by the Democrats.
One high-profile Democrat, however, will not be running. Mr Kerry, who narrowly lost the 2004 presidential race, yesterday announced from the floor of the Senate that he would not run again.
"This isn't the time for me to mount a presidential campaign," he said. "It is the time to put my energy to work as part of the majority in the Senate to do all I can to end this war."

1. Is this the least surprising headline you've seen lately? They've been campaigning in Iowa.

If I'm in Iowa, or anywhere else, and you have poured millions of dollars into convincing me and my fellow Iowans(or other state-ers) that you are the greatest thing since sliced bread, I might be inclined to give you a thumbs up.

However, the other 49 states have a little something to say about it, too. MKJ

2. does giulani have ANY republican tendencies? based on his views he sounds like he is
way to the liberal side of the dems. Kind of a harold ford Jr in reverse.

The guy dumped his wife (well, that is a conservative hallmark) and lived with a gay couple during the breakup, plus some other things I have read but do not recall at the moment.

and he was hoodwinked and bamboozzled by Bush, I guess that is typical republican.

4. Rudy loves the war in Iraq, and loved campaigning for Santorum, Allen
and many other right wing nutjobs.

6. He brought zero-tolerance policing to New York City...
...arresting people for jaywalking.

This was awful, firstly because:

In New York, the only way for a pedestrian to get around is to cross when the sign says, "Don't Walk," since there is no right-turn-on-red, and cars turn throughout the "Walk" cycle.

3. If Vilsack is not even leading in his home state, why is he running?
I realize it's a long, long ways out...an unprecendented long ways out by historical standards, but still. It seems unlikely to me Vilsack would increase his popularity in Iowa from this point, since I presume Democrats there already know him pretty well.
