Allard, Musgrave shelve marriage amendment in new Congress
They say bill won't go far in new Congress, which is dominated by Democrats.
By PETER ROPER
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

In past sessions, Colorado Sen. Wayne Allard and Rep. Marilyn Musgrave were conservative champions of a federal constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in the last Congress, both sponsoring legislation to do just that.

Not this year.

The two Republicans said last week they have no plans to re-introduce their legislation in the new Congress - another sign that Democrats are now in the majority.

"At this time, I haven't discussed it with anyone," Allard said on Thursday. "If we thought there was a decent chance to bring it to the floor for debate, I would, but with the new Congress, I'm not sure we will ever have that opportunity."

Aaron Johnson, Musgrave's spokesman, said the congresswoman would not introduce the legislation this year.

Y'all hear that?

That's because in 2008, it won't be about the gays anymore.

It'll be about illegal immigrants, legal immigrants, and various brown people needing to be scapegoated.

Everyone back into the pile!

1. It's So Pleasant To Go Days Without Hearing About Abortion and Gays
in the MSM. Maybe some actual public policy can be discussed, and real useful proposals started down the path to becoming law.

2. Isn't it wonderful
that people who hate for a living want to use the constitution as a weapon against a segment of society. And all because they hate them. Allard, musgrave two evil, hatefilled motherfuckers.

3. As a Coloradan, let me apologize for those two bigots
We're in the middle of trying to get rid of them. Allard is announcing his retirement (and we're gonna boot his ass out anyway), and The Bitch from Ft. Morgan is being heavily targetted for revenge for '08. We are trying to bring home a 100% Democratic representation for Colorado.

We're just about 66% done. 3 Rethugs left to get rid of. Xenophobic, Lambskin-Lamborn, and The Bitch from Ft. Morgan. Colorado will bring in a Democratic senator for sure (since Mallard is retiring).

5. and Tancredo will be out there
distracting the bigot wing of the Republican Party with his presidential run, which could be a good thing in that it will siphon support from any "legitimate" candidate. :) Maybe his constituents will wake up when they see what a total lack of representation they're getting again.

4. We used to hear a lot from the rightwing fundies that gay marriage
would "threaten" their heterosexual marriages.

How exactly is heterosexual marriage threatened, is my question.

Do husbands' penises fall off? Do lesbians sneak into their computer files and erase their children's health care? Are articles of patio furniture missing in the morning?

I never understood the exact nature of the threat gay marriages pose to straight couples.

Maybe the good Rev. Dobson could explain it to me.

Ian, nice post... as usual. Thank you.

6. I thought this was a grave threat to America
Has the prospect of gay marriage, something the Republicans couldn't quite get around to banning during the five plus years they had undisputed control of all of the government (and shouldn't that clue the fundy types that GOP pandering is just so much hokum), suddenly become not so much of a threat to the nation? Why are Allard and Musgrave just giving up on the traditional family and defending marriage? Are they lily-livered cowards, or just pandering politicians? Does their retreat on this vital issue mean that the threat of gay marriage is over or just that they don't have the belly for the fight?

Who will stand up for America's bigots if the Republicans stand down?
