21 US soldiers dead in Iraq today
by Joe in DC - 1/20/2007

Tonight, Reuters reports that five more soldiers were killed by Iraqi militia in Kerbala. Reuters had already reported on the deaths of 16 U.S. soldiers on Saturday:
The U.S. military announced the deaths of 16 soldiers, including 13 killed on Saturday when a helicopter went down northeast of Baghdad.
That brings today's death toll to 21.

How many more George, how many?

And if the #s are running like they have been this would also mean 200 + wounded, sick
or injured to the point that they need air lifted out of country.

http://www.icasualties.org/oif/

roughly 10 need air lifted out of Iraq for every 1 KIA

8. I was listening to CSN&Y today . . .
. . . and at the end of Young's "Ohio", Crosby is shouting "How many more? WHY? Why?"

Nothing has changed in 35 years. Nothing.

The powers that be still don't lose sleep over killing and maiming.

They still can't answer 'why'.

30. After Vietnam, they staged some small "easy" wars to lull people
Granada, for example. :eyes:

Americans were brainwashed back into believing "We're the US of A and we can kick anyone's ass if we want to."

Well, guess again, warmongers.

they certainly are 'surging' in that direction.

The shameless minority in the USA who supported this illegal war need to be held accountable by the majority, which are at least 70% of the American people.

The doctrine of a never-ending war based on a generalized, subjective cause like 'fighting terrorism' has to be repudiated. It's just a cash cow for the military-industrial complex, just like the "Soviet threat" was used to justify increased defense spending.

We have to start thinking about disarmament and creating peace instead of wars.

As long as there is no moral incentive to think about that, creating peace and engaging in disarmament, we are no different than the terrorists that we are claiming to eradicate.

............The battle at a government building in Kerbala was the bloodiest for U.S. troops in the Shi'ite south in two years and occurred as President George W. Bush presses leaders of the Shi'ite majority to crack down on militias from their community.

Act NOW to Bring the Troops Home!
What's Going On'; http://youtube.com/watch?v=2xqRDykUwJY Americans angered by Bush's plans to escalate the Iraq war will flood the streets of Washington on Saturday, January 27, in a massive national peace march organized by United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ). Marchers will call on Congress to listen to the voters, not Bush, by using its power to end Bush's war and bring the troops home. The last three national marches organized by UFPJ each attracted between 300,000 and 500,000 people. :grouphug:

37. ...while the United States Senate positions itself for 08.
Binding, non-binding, honestly! Even if Ted Kennedy's resolution passes, that just brings us back to the status quo. That is not what we elected them to do. Kennedy is chairman of the Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee because the American people want us out of Iraq. Kicking the can down the road, at the cost of 2000 more American lives and hundreds of thousands more Iraqi lives, this Nero approach will not do. We intend to drive that point home next saturday. Why don't the Senators sit down and agree to a Senate version of H.R. 508? That is the only thing that will end this bloody occupation.

Everything is fine. Going swimmingly. If only the liberal media would tell you about all the soccer fields completed today... (sarcasm)

The good news is that at least 70% of us have gotten beyond the spin and can see what's going on for what it is - a disaster that we need to end as soon as possible. Amen.

42. This disaster will probably be blamed on Iran
This is the deadliest day for US forces in about 2 years. The wingnuts are probably already gearing up to blame the casualties on Iranians supplying weapons to Shiite militias and Sunni insurgents. The hawks have been searching for a pretext to strike Iran for a while, a Gulf-of-Tonkin-style provocation whether or not it actually occurred. This is probably a gift right into their laps.

43. K&R! damn murdering bastards... oops i gotta remember to read gandhi, read gandhi, read gandhi...
geez, do these war-criminals piss me off... anyhow, here's the recent revisions...
They're getting smoother with each post... i need to find his writings or speeches
in complete form to really appreciate them. Still, this is a new, improved combination
of quotes by the great teacher:

on violence:
"What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy? It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence. I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent. Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. I cannot teach you violence, as I do not myself believe in it. I can only teach you not to bow your heads before any one -- even at the cost of your life."

on patience:
"An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching. First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. One needs to be slow to form convictions, but once formed they must be defended against the heaviest odds. Unwearied ceaseless effort is the price that must be paid for turning faith into a rich infallible experience. Indolence is a delightful but distressing state; we must be doing something to be happy. Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it. When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it--always."

on courage:
"A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. If you don't ask, you don't get. A 'No' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble. Unity to be real must stand the severest strain without breaking. Adaptability is not imitation. An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it. Breach of promise is a base surrender of truth. A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave."

on strength:
"They cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them. It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err. Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love. Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong. Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man. Non-violence is the article of faith. "

~Mahatma Gandhi~
