WASHINGTON - President Bush on Saturday challenged lawmakers skeptical of his new Iraq plan to propose their own strategy for stopping the violence in Baghdad.

"To oppose everything while proposing nothing is irresponsible," Bush said.

In a pitch to lawmakers and the American people, Bush said the United States will keep the onus on the Iraqi government to take charge of security and reach a political reconciliation. He countered Democrats and his fellow Republicans who argue that Bush is sending 21,500 more U.S. troops into Iraq on the same mission.

"We have a new strategy with a new mission: Helping secure the population, especially in Baghdad," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "Our plan puts Iraqis in the lead."

The president asked for patience from lawmakers who grilled Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, when they testified before Congress in defense of the president's new plan.

2. looking Maliki in the eye does stuff to Bush.
In his radio broadcast, Bush replayed the highlights of his Wednesday night address to the nation.

He said the 21,500 troops being sent to Baghdad and Anbar province, a base for al-Qaida, have a changed mission.

"This time there will be adequate Iraqi and U.S. forces to hold the areas that have been cleared," Bush said.

Bush said Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has pledged that political sectarian interference with security operations will not be tolerated. "This time, Iraqi and American forces will have a green light to enter neighborhoods that are home to those fueling sectarian violence," he said.

3. "patience"? He asks"patience" from lawmakers AND says on 60 minutes that it
does NOT matter what congress thinks because he has decided. And that is that. He also claims to already HAVE the funding for the escalation.

4. Sometimes when someone unleashes an unmitigated disaster, it's not readily fixable but
that does not mean compounding an unmitigated disaster is the answer.

8. The dems have a very specific and workable plan: bring the
troops home, help the Iraqis rebuild by giving the work to Iraqis (very capable and educated people) and fire Bush/Cheney now.

9. Look who's talking about being irresponsible!!
How could he have the audacity to be so hypocritical? The pot calling the kettle black! The most irresponsible president/person in history...has the NERVE to call someone else irresponsible because they haven't told him (as if he would listen any more than he did the Iraq Study Group) how to get out of the irresponsible mess he's created with his irresponsible attack on Iraq. The man/child is nothing but a dumb irresponsible fool!

he let this happen. Four years and this is all he can come up with? If he truly believe this will work then why are the twins still roaming free (and those nieces and nephews too)?

and expect different results is insane.

16. Oh, fucking please!
Any plan that didn't involve doing exactly what this stupid mother fucker wanted would have been rejected out of hand. There really isn't any choice but to remove this asshole from office. Either that or trick him into walking out in front of Laura'a car.
