Update on the "Surge speech" the WH has been making all day
They started early this morning not only "prepping the battlefield" but sending out feelers, hold a figure up to the wind.

First it was reported that he would admit that mistakes were made (read that again carefully)

Then we heard that the 22,000 no wait the 21,500 no wait the 20,000 would only be doing training not that hard you know real Army type stuff (I hope this means that shrapnel flies slower towards them)

Now he is trying to claim that it is the Iraqis's plan.

By 9 PM there is no telling what this will have evolved into.

9. I say we should send him AND his twins
Hell, why not send every damned one of these cowards who like to play war with other people's children. Yank Rummy out of retirement and stick a rifle in his hand. Send Dead Eye Dick over there with his shotgun and tell him the place is crawling with tamed pheasants and elderly lawyers.

2. Wasn't it originally scheduled for 8 PM?
Did they push it back?

Maybe I am mistaken (as I often am).

3. Dems and R's met with W and just now left the WH
Each side gave a comment to the press. On MSNBC right now.

Dems said they still don't know what the new deployed troops will do. W is notifying not negotiating.

The R's, of course, are saying that if we don't finish the job, the Iraqis will be here on the streets of the United States.

This is insane.

5. The IRAQIS will be on the streets of the US?
Did they actually say that? Or did they say "terrorists"?

10. Mitch McConnell said that Iraq will be in America
I couldn't believe my own ears. He said that -if we don't finish the job, Iraq will be in America.

I hope they replay it. It's insane for him to assert such a thing.

12. That statement makes no f'ing sense!
What does that even mean? That Iraq-style violence will be in the streets of the US, or that Iraqi insurgents will be in the streets? What sort of brainless gibberish is that?

15. "brainless gibberish" - That nails it
Surely they'll replay it. They just replayed a moment form Harry Reid's comments where he said that W is practicing his speech "right now".

As far as I'm concerned, McConnell almost looked baffled himself. No time to process the talking points he got in the WH a few minutes before. I can picture Rove handing him his marching orders as they left the meeting. So they marched out to the microphones and delivered as ordered.

6. I'm sure everyone at the WH is very busy today.
Getting Bush ready for his big speech tonight.

The drugs - gotta make sure the cocktail is just right. No coke jaw. No lip licking. No eyebrow twitching. Remind him to not smirk, or act arrogant. Or let his eyes dart off to the side.

The clothes - red tie? Blue? Some other color?

The location - the Oval Office? WH Library? Rose Garden?

The drugs - somebody keep George away from the booze! Can't have any interactions.

The clothes - extra suit and change of underwear in case George soils himself just before going live.

The planning - make sure Dick is close by at all times.

The prompting - make sure George can hear Karl really well in his earpiece. Remind George to not stop talking while listening, he can't appear to be prompted.

Yes, very, very busy day indeed...

7. The MSM is suggesting that it will be a "stagger" rather than a "surge"
....but knowing Dubya, he'll make it sound like a "seep", a "trickle" or even an "ooze", sort of like what comes from the Bush/Cheney asses!

11. "Shuffle"
That was the term the WH fed the MSM on the great Anti-Surge Generals purge of 2007 and it was so odd that I got the feeling that it was only used as a test. I would not be surprised if they use that word or some other one not here to fore mentioned tonight.

All the MSM will be clamoring around about using the new term and completely miss that apparently now only 11% back the "inside last endrun of asking for bigger shovel to keep digging into this abyss of grim death" (my words)

8. All the 'leaks' about this 'plan' that have been coming out for the last two weeks are merely
feeling out how it or the terms chosen or the political response would be. It's just different attempts at marketing the 'product'.

20. How much wiggle is in these two paragraphs?
Unveiling his retooled war strategy in a pivotal prime-time address from the White House, the president will acknowledge in unusually stark terms how dire the situation is - because of errors in U.S. assumptions and failures by the government in Iraq to follow through on promises.

The U.S. is changing its goals, switching from a focus on training Iraqi security forces to securing the battered population and decentralizing its reconstruction efforts and economic aid to the seats of the worst violence. Iraqis, meanwhile, will be expected to meet their responsibilities and take the lead in the fighting.

18. Bullshiite! When would a sitting president take plans or orders

from a prime minister of another country that we occupy??!!

That would be a huge admission of failure on his part, and I would seriously hope that this "Somebody else's plan" be terminated by a majority in both houses!

19. Nora O'D interviewing Sen. Gordon Smith - Just now ended
Edited on Wed Jan-10-07 03:44 PM by eleny
He's continuing to assert that he has a disagreement with the prez. Making all of Baghdad a "green zone" won't happen. And we can't wait for the Iraqis to stand up before we stand down.

Smith wishes the prez well but at the "end of the day if you can't speak up you might as well go home". That's a direct quote that I typed as he said it to be sure I got it right.

Way to go Smith. Better late than never and thank you for standing your ground today.
