Gov. Hugh Carey of New York - Opinions?
What are people's opinions of Gov. Hugh Carey of New York (New York governor in the mid-70s through early '80s)?

I ask mainly because I was running a couple of alternate history scenarios in my head of - 1) Hubert Humphrey winning the presidency in '68 and 2) Gerald Ford winning the presidency in '76, both of which result in a 1980s without Ronald Reagan. (In the Humphrey scenario, though, Reagan winds up president from '73 through '81).

In that scenario, I wondered if Gov. Carey might have wound up president. According to Wikipedia he considered running in both '76 and '80, but the timing never really worked out right.

Good guv? Would he have played nationally?

1. I only have vague memories
of him from my childhood. Seemed pretty popular.
