Forget about the Surge - that is merely a tactic, to be used or not, by a petulant, barely sentient, arrogant and aggressive boy king playing with toy soldiers in the oval office.
If the Democrats subscribe to dealing with tactical issues, we have already lost before they even start.
They need to look at the situation from a strategic point of view. Here are a few questions that they need to ask out loud, repeatedly and loudly:
1. How did we get into this mess in IraqNam? 2. What is the current situation, and in what direction is it going? 3. If we continue with present tactical moves or even increase troop numbers, how will that impact the current situation? 4. Do we need to consider leaving, and to what extent? 5. Do we need to consider changing all tactics, reducing our footprint, reducing exposure, while offering some support to selected leaders in all three groups? 6. What is the possible advantage to reaching out to Iran, Syria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and others? 7. What are the possible dangers to reaching out to them? 8. What is the status of our military, and how does that impact our global security? 9. CAN we get out now?
The first question is easily answered. Cheney's OSP intel, deliberate lies and mistruths from Rice, Bush, Darth, and Rummie, a yellow-bellied Democratic party scared of its own shadow combined with warmongering neoconMen from the GOP resulted in a obedient, ineffective and destructive Congress.
the second, two words are sufficient: Quagmire, Disaster the Third, See answer to #2 and double it. the Fourth, Yes. To the greatest possible. the Fifth, duh! the Sixth, AH, now we start dealing with strategic changes on a case by case basis. We could write books on this - and should, frankly. the Seventh, the biggest danger we face is if it is Condi and Darth who control our foreign policy when dealing with those countries. WE can bank on them fucking it up. the Eighth, a growing problem. It will cause problems globally. the Nineth? Of course. It is a matter of willpower, vision, rational discussions and having sane leaders who are flexible, concerned, and mature.
