Tom DeLay's Pandora's Box on Redistricting has opened.
Edited on Wed Dec-20-06 11:23 PM by Daylin Byak
I think that was a approitate title for this thread. This came from politics1.com, it's talks about a Legislator from Nex Mexico that wants to makes The 1st Congressional District of New Mexico(which is currently represented by Republican Heather Wilson) more Democratic so the Democrats will have a easier time beating her in '08, here's the complete story.

New Mexico Democrats have had enough of losing close fights to Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R), so they're ready to take a page from Tom DeLay's playbook. According to Roll Call, State Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino (D) plans to introduce a bill that would redraw the state's congressional districts before the 2008 election. The plan would significantly increase the number of Hispanic and Native American voters in exchange for shifting a large GOP agricultural community into CD-2. Dems currently control the NM House and Senate. Governor Bill Richardson (D) said he'd be "willing to consider" the proposal .

This is a terrible news, look I want to see Wilson gone from Congress as the next guy but by running a good campaign not by cheating, I hope this bill does not go through.

And it's offical, with DeLay's redistricting plan on Texas and the Supreme Court decsion of this matter has offically opened up a Pandora's Box for this type of shit.

1. Well it is not unfair for the dems to do this...
they need to redistrict to get back to where we were...beyond that might be cheating though. I hope they can avoid that. Texas and Georgia really need to be reworked though.

2. Until DeLay broke tradition, I think the redistricting occurred every 10 years
following the census. That seemed fair and, IMHO, neither Party should control the process; there should be neutral arbiters, maybe out-of-state, to do it as objectively as possible. But I'm all for fixing things if there are obvious gerrymandering partitions that give Wilson an unfair edge.

3. It's not cheating, it's how politics works
This is a Democratic district, all this would do is move more Republican districts to the more Republican district.

4. It's not cheating if the Dems want to put the district lines back to
how they were determined via the last census. I don't know if that's the plan, but it should be. I believe that should be done in EVERY State! I don't want the Dems to manipulate the system any more than I want the Pubs to do it! Since it's 3 more years until the next census, I think it shoud be fixed NOW!

5. Why are Dems so wussy?
We should fight fire with fire! The other side doesn't play fair. I'm tired of the party just rolling over and letting the Republicans have their way. All we do is scream and holler. It's time for our politicians to grow some balls and do what it takes to get rid of these marginal Republican congressmen and women.

I think Illinois would be another great state to redraw some lines!

6. I have no problems with redrawing the lines
To benefit the said party(either dems or repukes) cause there going to do it anyways cause they can but the fact it there not doing it the right way, there taking the Tom DeLay route and redrawing lines whenever and not waiting for the approitate time which is after the census is taken which will be in 4 years. Thats cheating in my book and not doing the right thing.

And by the way Illinois did gerrymander there Districts to benefit the Democrats cause Dems control both chambers of the State Legislature.

7. The Supreme Court ruled what DeLay did was legal
The states can redraw districts at ANYTIME, with our without a census. Why should Democrats wait for the census??? The Court said it was okay to redraw lines whenever you want. Republican states will do it. Why should we just sit by and not do it?

8. Heck, the districts are gerrymandered in Fla, MIch, Ohio.
Tit for tat. Time to ungerrymander some of the gerrymandered.
