Crist Selects Butterworth To Head DCF

By SHERRI ACKERMAN and JEROME R. STOCKFISCH The Tampa Tribune

Published: Dec 20, 2006

TALLAHASSEE - The opportunity to make a difference lured Bob Butterworth, Florida's longest-serving attorney general, back into public service - this time to steer the state's most troubled agency.

Gov.-elect Charlie Crist announced Tuesday that Butterworth will head the Department of Children & Families, an appointment that surprised and wowed public officials and social service advocates.

"I'm stunned that he would take the position," said Howard Finklestein, Broward County's chief public defender, who called Butterworth a friend and mentor. "He's the most honest, capable politician in the state of Florida."
..cut..
Sen. Ronda Storms, R-Brandon, praised the appointment, which crosses political lines, as a "smart decision." Crist is a Republican; Butterworth is a Democrat.

1. Good heavens.
When I think of all the Republicans they had planted as Dems.....ahem Theresa LePore ahem...turnabout is fair play. How amazing, though.

And note that everyone is stunned. They're used to a Bush.

2. DCF is a disaster
it has been the target of so many investigations and caught in so much chicanery that I think Crist simply didn't want to have another repug held responsible when it goes down in flames again.

4. That may be true but Butterworth is a fighter and doer
so I believe he will make changes for the good of Florida's children.

8. I hope so.
My wife works for the (outsourced) agency that handles foster care in several counties. And it's a mess, mainly due to underfunding.

But, I'm a little leary of anyone who is endorsed by Rhonda Storms. She's the only woman in Florida that makes Katherine Harris look sane.

9. LOL you are soooo right about Rhonda
BUT to be fair, this was from the Tampa Tribune and she just got elected so it was an easy target for the reporter and what is she really going to say to the new GAY Gov.

5. I'll believe when Crist fulfills his promise to give felons who served their time the right to vote.
If he passes it off to the Legislature, it will never happen. Already, tough talkin' Attorney General designate, Bill McCollum, has come out against it.

Will Charlie Crist stand up to Bill McCollum and follow through on his pledge to give felons who've done their time, the right to vote?

We will find out, soon enough. If he does this, he will live up to the moniker he gave himself for his campaign, "the people's governor." Until then, I am not convinced.

7. can charlie crist be so blind as to appoint an attorney, not a licensed clinical social worker, to
the post of managing the DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES???!!!! that is as asinine as appointing MICHAEL CHERTOFF the witchhunter in the BILL CLINTON IMPEACHMENT CASE as the CHIEF MAXIMO OF THE HOMELAND SECURITY DEPARTMENT. Honestly, sometimes I think that all the republicans want to do, or know to do is to have diarrhea all over the place!

Butterworth may have been a very good attorney general and lt. governor. But, the Department of Children and Families needs a LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER and LICENSED SOCIAL WORKERS to work for it.

It is time to stop the BUSH CHARADE!

10. Butterworth is a good choice...
and Crist did not have to pick him so i'll give him kudos for it.

Now if only he would flip flop on the FCAT. <<Dreaming
