`08 Wish List
I`d give almost anything for a magic button that would transform the `08 presidential race from the standard media circus to something of deep and memorable substance. How tired I am of the who`s on top chatter and the pointless accumulation of tidbits about earth-tone suits or who we would rather have a beer with. I`ve had my fill of national discussions about whether wind surfers are real men or which potential First Lady`s cookie recipe I prefer. It`s meaningless drivel in the scheme of things, particularly for a country whose citizens are being slaughtered in Iraq and whose rights are disappearing like the arctic ice shelf.

I want a grown up to walk onto the `08 Democratic stage, take a dead serious stand on the urgent issues and....in plain language....lay out some solutions. No focus group, no fancy backdrops, no token anybody, no teleprompter. Just the courage of his/her convictions described with raw honesty. Someone out there has to be courageous enough to put the brakes on life as we know it and help set a new direction. Our willingness to accept image over substance must end if we want to save our country. I do not care one whit about an interview with the former roomate of a second cousin to our candidate`s next door neighbor. What I want to know is: How are we going to get out of Iraq? What are we going to do about our national debt? How can we lessen the chasm between the Two Americas? What about alternative energy and affordable health care? What can we do to improve our standing in the world? How can we reinvigorate our manufacturing base? How can we make people more valued than corporations?

We can invent and enjoy all the gadgets in the world or strive to go from a size 14 to a size 2 in six months. Great, but where`s the beef? Where`s the essence of who we are? What`s in our hearts? What matters most? Someone needs to deep-six the Beltway consultants and get right down to the nitty gritty, down with Janice at the check out counter, down with Earl, the oil truck driver, down with the heart and soul of America.

I think the `08 race will be a defining moment, a time when someone just might tell a different story, walk a different path. What a wonderful change that would be, to extricate ourselves from this darkness and finally....finally....see some light.

1. I wish the public would get more involved
like in letting politicians know what they want and care about. And then having politicians address these concerns. I think the idea of Unity08 in having a forum where a platform can be hammered out is an intersting one and one that should be watched. Personally, I'd like to see the Democratic Party do something similar-find out which issues are real to the American public, and then find ways of addressing those issues.

2. I do, too, but I'd rather the public get involved by telling the media
that our Presidential elections aren't horse races and we want to hear about REAL issues - not who's the prettiest candidate.

4. Sadly, I don't think they will listen
the MSM has this quaint notion that it can tell us what we want to watch. Maybe that's why I've given up almost entirely on TV.

3. Maybe it's time for the return of real town hall meetings, without
the audience being hand-selected.
And I like your wish list.

5. Wesley Clark is your grownup
