We don't need no steekin' foreign policy, says Tony Snow. We have done just fine in Iraq and have built 37,000 new schools and a McDonald's and we did that all without so much as a plan, never mind an actual foreign policy. Sigh!

Anyway, here is the story:

White House: Syrian visits hurt progress
By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The White House said Thursday that Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson (news, bio, voting record)'s trip to Syria was not only inappropriate, but that it gave undue legitimacy to a government that is thwarting democratic reform in the Middle East.

Nelson emerged from a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Wednesday, saying Assad was willing to help control the Iraq-Syrian border. The Florida Democrat said he viewed Assad's remarks as "a crack in the door for discussions to continue. I approach this with realism, not optimism."

But White House press secretary Tony Snow said the trip by Nelson, a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, and future visits to Syria expected by Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., and Arlen Specter, R-Pa., send an unhelpful, mixed message to the Syrians.

"We want to make sure that they understand that just because they have visitors does not mean that the position of the United States government has changed," Snow said.

2. They're pissed? What about the American people?
We've been pissed for 6 years, no make that outraged! When you are dealing with an incompetent, incapacitated president, you have to take extraordinary steps to keep a dialog going with the rest of the world. Good for the senators--they are doing their job.

3. Well, if we had a leader who could do more that untter the same
platitudes day after day, then others wouldn't have to do his work for him.

6. How's this for foreshadowing a nasty attack:
"It may cost some people their credibility," Snow said. "Sen. Nelson went and thought that he gotten concessions out of Bashar Assad two years ago, and he came back empty-handed."

So Kerry, Dodd, and Nelson - all members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee shouldn't speak to foreign governments we don't like? It's part of their job.
