3. Hussein's a fairly common name when you think about it.
Edited on Sun Dec-03-06 01:01 AM by Counciltucky
Not necessarily in America, but it's definitely a common name amongst those of Arab/north African heritage.

If I were Obama, I'd just come out and say, "Yeah, my middle name is Hussein. Does it really matter?"

(edit: changed "If Obama's smart, he'd" to "If I were Obama, I'd")

5. No, it doesn't matter. George isn't a better President
because he middle name is that WASP'y sounding "Walker."

6. Of course, he could point out that Hussein means "Handsome one" - and then flash that smile
Edited on Sun Dec-03-06 01:24 AM by beaconess
That would probably be the last time he'd be asked about it . . . :-)

7. Perfect! By the way, did you seem him on Leno last night?
How refreshing . . . to think of a President who actually had a brain and a good sense of humor. There is something of Bill Clinton's relaxed self-confidence in him.

9. I agree
I loved his response to Leno's question about whether he inhaled. "Yes - that was the point."

8. This was worthy of a thread? Hussein has arab connotations.
It isn't analogous to ANY wasp name. And it's naive to think McCain's middle name is similarly an issue.

10. "Hussein has arab connotations"? Well, Sidney has sissy connotations.
Edited on Sun Dec-03-06 01:33 AM by pnwmom
Which, in the eyes of the bigots, could be almost as bad.

P.S. If you don't think a post is thread-worthy, then the best response is to ignore it. Otherwise, you're just giving it the attention you just said it didn't deserve.

12. Nope, not "almost as bad."
Not even close. Please remove head from sand. Folks need to address this liability head on rather than naively thinking making fun of McCain's name will make it better.

13. No one's head's in the sand
And Obama's a big boy who can handle himself pretty well - I don't think he'll have much trouble with the other kids making fun of his name. If they try, he'll certainly address it as needed.

When he first announced he was running for the U.S. Senate, the same kinds of speculation among Democrats floated around - "Oh my GOD! His name sounds just like OSAMA! He'll never have a chance."

And he knocked that down so quickly, referring to himself as the skinny guy with the funny name. People had trouble pronouncing it at first (or even figuring out which was the first and which was the last name - he was often called Obama Barack). But within weeks, people started to get his name straight and no one tried to compare him to Osama bin laden - at least no one that mattered.

And he won a crowded primary with more than 50% of the vote.

And then he knocked it out of the park at the Democratic Convention.

And then he kicked ass in the general election.

And now he's the junior Senator from Illinois.

And everybody knows his name. And no one gets him mixed up with Osama bin laden.

And I have no doubt that, if anyone tries to tar him because his middle name is Hussein, he will turn it around to his advantage.

There's no need to worry about him. Obama can take care of himself.

Getting all afraid that people will make fun of his middle name seems silly to me.

17. I think the fact that this is a retarded thread is the point being made. Worrying about Hussein...
is equally retarded.

20. You all sound like my Grandmother
She endlessly hated any one with a name she did not think was English/American. Drove the whole family nuts. Every odd name she would go after we would tell her it was Polish and for some reason that really set her off.

say the names sounded Russian or communist.

22. I once lived in the South and this went on
The women next door kept making fun of my name. It sounder Jewish to her. Well I found out her maiden name was the same as my mother's and my maiden name was the same as a very rich Northern who had moved into town. She thought highly of money. So I let it all hang out one day about how un-American my name most likely was, and she shut up like a clam on my German name which whe was sure was a Jewish name. It was sort of funny. My Grandmother almost drove my sister and I nuts, just as this women did. I never did get what she meant by 'is that a Jewish name'. I so wanted to tell her I was a member of that Church that did so much to free the slaves but thought better of it. Specially since the state police had moved into the schools and people were turning over school buses. I could not understand how my grandmother was so like these deep South people. I only lasted about a year in that small city.
