Democrats defy Pelosi, elect Hoyer House leader

By Thomas Ferraro and Richard Cowan 1 hour, 7 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A week after winning back control of the U.S. Congress, Democrats in the House defied incoming speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday and bypassed a vocal
Iraq war critic to elevate her moderate deputy to majority leader.

It marked an embarrassing first defeat for Pelosi, a California liberal who had endorsed Rep. John Murtha (news, bio, voting record) of Pennsylvania, a key player in the anti-war effort that helped Democrats sweep to power in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The secret vote behind closed doors was 149-86.

Democrats embraced Hoyer, a Maryland moderate who has been Pelosi's deputy while she served the past three years as minority leader. The two have had a somewhat strained relationship.

Pelosi, as expected, was officially nominated to be the first woman speaker of the House. A vote by the full House will be held when the 110th Congress convenes in January.

9. How so?
All Pelosi did was support Murtha. She didn't say they had to support him just that she was. It's still called democracy right?

11. 146 of the Democrats in Congress are jerks?
if that's the case then we are in real trouble. I don't see it that way though. They weren't voting for any particular policy, agenda, or ideology, they were voting for a leader. Someone they would have to deal with on a day to day basis. Nothing more.

14. I just despite the DLC
After reviewing Hoyer's record, I'm really fine with it, so I edited to reflect my opinion about Hoyer's nomination, and not my opinion about the whore DLC.

15. The DLC is a political machine...
one of the currently necessary evils of the business of Washington. I hope that the new leadership really gets serious about campaign and ethics reform. If not, they won't be in power very long.

Glad that cleaning up the lobbying mess is the first item on Pelosi's list.

12. Not true. They chose her Speaker by unanimous vote.

Just goes to prove that Dems have their own voice. They are not a lockstepping echo chamber like the GOP. Which, by the way, the GOP leadership is even more divided. How about that Lott vote, 25-24. Heh. ;)

edit to add, they can disagree with Pelosi yet still support her strongly.

18. I wasn't talking about her being elected. That's what people
will say because she endorsed Murtha (rightly so IMHO) and her "Dems" chose Hoyer.

20. Yes, but I don't care "what people say."
My retort is that they still support her, and do not march in lockstep like the GOP. And again, even the GOP is more fractured. Which I consider a good thing. The echo chamber mentality is disastrous for this country.

is wrong.

Lots of Dems are against abortion. But most of them respect a woman's right to choose.

Get it straight. The real issue is whether or not a person respects a woman's right to choose.

13. we still are going to get a lot done
We are still going to get a lot of good stuff done like

1) raising the minimum wage
2) providing oversight into spending in Iraq
3) making changes to the prescription drug plan
4) finding a permanent solution to Iraq

The dems are going to lead by helping to make America great again and we finally have a female
Speaker of the House. She is in the # 3 spot as far as leaders go in America. That's progress.

James
jpwhite@okstatealumni.org

ps. Now we need to really get wild and start breaking the barriers as far as the White House is concerned. Why haven't we had a female as pres or VP? What about someone who is african-american or latino? Something to think about....
