After Win, Democrats Revert to Finger-Pointing

By ADAM NAGOURNEY
Published: November 16, 2006

State Democratic leaders are saying Howard Dean, the party chairman, is not receiving the credit he deserves for the triumph.

Offering a rather different view, two leading party strategists rebuked Mr. Dean on Wednesday, saying the Democrats could have captured 40 House seats rather than 29 had Mr. Dean bowed to demands by Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, leader of the effort to recapture the House, to put more money into Congressional races.

“I would describe his leadership as Rumsfeldian in its incompetence,” one strategist, James Carville, said of Mr. Dean.

Liberal bloggers say they are not receiving the credit they deserve and are chafing at how what they call the mainstream media has showered too much credit on Mr. Emanuel and his Senate counterpart, Charles E. Schumer of New York, for the sweep.

<<snip>>

On Capitol Hill, soon-to-be Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California has waded into a leadership fight that has divided her caucus, providing the public — in its first glimpse of the incoming Congress — with a reminder of just how much Democrats like to rumble. Democrats, if grimacing, sought to put the best face on the latest episode of that familiar Washington series, Democrats in Disarray.

“We are a diverse party,” said Donald Fowler, a veteran South Carolina Democratic leader. “We have different people from different backgrounds, and we see things differently both in terms of style and issues.”

Mr. Fowler sighed before letting out: “We’re nuts! We’re all nuts!”

1. Never Thought I'd Agree with NY Times
But he is dead on.

Democrats are proving this will be a two year pissing contest.

My advice. Bet on the Republicans in 08

2. If things don't change...
I agree with you, two years is not a long time politically.

3. Becauase we're DEMS!
And trying to get Democrats to degree is rather like herding cats...feral cats.

But....a certain amount of disagreement is healthy, so I don't like to see people (including the media) saying Dems are in "disarray" and "can't unite" just because they disagree. However, the sniping from Carville and others goes beyond simple disagreement.

4. You're right, but...
the infighting should be kept amongst ourselves, as much as possible. But we don't need Carville and Rahm airing the Dems dirty laundry all over the airwaves.

8. that is just propaganda from the Reich Wing, dont you have that figured out yet..???
ALL the media is owned by the Plutocratic Far Right.. oberman and dobbs are the only voices of reason on the tube.. Dobbs may not always please everyone, especially the ankle biters, but he does more on the TV than anyone else or even all the rest put together.. he has specials on the destruction of the manufacturing base in the USA, outsourcing and the systematic elimination of the middle class and voting machines and stolen freedoms all the time.. you cant write off someone because they dont agree with one thing you believe they should..

Finger pointing...
is not discussion. I'm all for discussion, but no need for public nastiness.

11. this is just people trying to jocky for position
This is just people jockying for position. Once the new congress actually is in session we will get busy on getting the minimum wage raised, provide oversight into spending on Iraq, get a sensible position on how to fix Iraq, and set up new rules on what lobbyists can do. The dems have a plan and things are going to be great in 2007.

ps. I do think people need to consider raising the FICA limit from 90,000 to one million dollars. We need to show the seniors of America that we are serious in making sure that they will be taken care of.
