Carville has his facts wrong....he needs to apologize.
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 08:35 PM by madfloridian
I have posted these facts here before, at least in part, they get ignored until Carville opens his big mouth.

http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7005529449

"Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The Democratic National Committee (DNC) says it "gladly" spent millions to finance its victory over Republicans this November.

In an interview with All Headline News (AHN) DNC Communications director Karen Finney says strategist and pundit James Carville "got the facts wrong" when he said Democrats could have won more races if they had put more money into the fight.

Finney says the DNC knew 2006 would be "very important" and spent $30 million on campaigns, up from the $9.8 million they spent in 2002. (Up to 30 million from 9.8? Wait...there's more)

Carville, one of the leading Democratic strategists and a sharp voice within the party says Democrats could have won as many as 50 seats in the House, yet Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic Party, never authorized the necessary campaign spending. Yet, Finney contends Carville "simply doesn't know the facts about what the DNC did in this election. In addition to the $30 million we put into the '06 races, the DNC happily did take out a <$10 million> loan because Governor Dean is committed to helping Democrats win."

Finney adds that Democrats were fundraising "to the wire" and spent half of the $10 million loan on Congressional races."

And a couple of folks are defending him, but Carville is so damn convincing he has people here questioning that Dean did his job.

"Yet, after a big win, Democrats see no reason to abandon Dean. Former DNC Chair Don Fowler says, "This is is nonsense... Democrats won a great victory on November 7; control of the United States House of Representatives, control of the United States Senate, majority of Governors, and majority of state legislative bodies. Governor Dean deserves to continue as DNC Chair."

Nebraska's Democratic Chair Steve Achelpohl, in an open letter to Carville, adds, "From my perspective, Governor Howard Dean's 50 State Strategy is the best thing to happen to the Democratic Party in many years... Our Party is well-served by Howard Dean. He gives Democrats hope and opportunity in all parts of the country, many far too long ignored by the National Party... I strongly supported Governor Dean for DNC Chair."

And now let's start a dialogue about the primary races Rahm funded to get his own guy in. Who wants to start? I am going to watch Olbermann.

1. Oh, and we won 6 governorships and 9 statehouses....
On Fox News, Dean took partial credit for those, but he gave great kudos to the DSCC and DCCC.

He is gracious, Rahm is not. Schumer is trying. Carville's an ass.

2. Carville is having a lot of fun...laughing up his sleeve about this.
And the media is having some chuckles as well.

When you keep people on the defensive, it is hard to get things done.

This was planned.

So it's been a while since Carville got shitcanned by Big Dog but every once in a while it's nice to see him crawl out of his hole and and reminds us why.

4. Thank you, that was cheery.
The move was made. We knew it was coming. Carville, we know now, sabotaged Kerry in 04.

Carville even conned Harold Ford into believing he had something to do with choosing the chair, and poor Harold has been refusing the chair Carville offered.

Dean was elected, NOT by the insiders in DC..but by the DNC members..440 of them throughout the country.

He makes them happy, screw Carville.

5. MyDD Two reasons why Carville despises Dean.
http://www.mydd.com/story/2006/11/15/162925/71

"James Carville's Consultant Con
by Chris Bowers, Wed Nov 15, 2006 at 04:29:25 PM EST

There are two main reasons why James Carville does not like Howard Dean. The first is that Howard Dean does not trash other Democrats, and Carville prefers Democrats who throw their own party under the bus. The second is that he is a political consultant, and as such many of his friends have gotten rich off of commissions from television advertisements. As far as he is concerned, all donations to all Democratic committees exist so that he and his friends can get richer. Since Howard Dean is spending money on field organizers and grants to state parties, his friends tend to not get rich from the money the DNC raised. This is abhorrent to Carville, since Democratic Party committees exist to make him and his friends rich."

"However, there is a serious problem with many of the television advertisements that Democrats run. That is why on MyDD we set up Adwatch in order to monitor if the money we raised for campaigns was being spent effectively. Looking at the final results from the fifteen House races where the DCCC spent its money, one has to wonder if we did spend our money as effectively as we could have:

1. PA-06: Lost
2. NM-01: Losing
3. CT-05: win, but credited the netroots
4. OH-15: Losing
5. IL-06: Lost
6. IN-08: Win
7. CA-50: Lost
8. PA-07: Win, but raised $1M online
9. AZ-05: Win
10. KY-04: Lost
11. WA-08: Lost
12. PA-08: Win, but credited the netroots
13. OH-18: Win, but defeated DCCC candidate in primary
14. FL-22: Win
15. CT-04: Loss

The numbers I used for this ranking come from when there was still one week to go in the election, but they still tell a disturbing tale (see source information here). Why did the DCCC lose, or is in the process of losing, eight of its top fifteen targets? Why have only six of the fifteen candidates the DCCC originally backed in these races win?

The other day I posted a post saying we should not criticize Rahm...but I just took it back. Go for it.

6. C & L video...Dean answers Carville's first volley on Fox Sunday.
http://www.crooksandliars.com/2006/11/15/dean-on-carville-this-is-some-kind-inside-the-beltway-silliness

Q. "The election results were barely in when a top democratic strategist, James Carville — you can see where I'm headed with this — a former advisor to Bill Clinton, started going after you. Let's take a look at what he had to say. (Clip: The RNC did a better job than the DNC, that's the republican national committee and the democratic national committee, this year. He says, the house and senate campaign committees made up for your shortcomings and that Congressman Harold Ford should replace you as chairman of the DNC. First of all, what do you make of his criticism and do you have any intention of stepping down?

DEAN: I have to say I get a laugh out of that one. Here we have — let's leave the federal races aside. The DCCC and the DSCC did do a wonderful job. The truth is we got six governors. We got nine additional legislative chambers. New Hampshire now has a democratic House and senate for the first time in a century. We did great. I think the time really has come now, now that we're in power, at least in the Congress, to pull together, to be unified. We've got a lot to do in t two years. We have a elect a democratic president.

Q. Do you have any intention of stepping down?

DEAN: No, I talked to Harold last night. He doesn't want the job. This is some kind inside the beltway silliness."

7. Carville is an ass.
Thank you for shedding light on these items that help make that clear.

Dean did a great job this year, as did many dems who worked hard to get themselves and/or others elected. What, precisely, did Carville actually contribute to that? Did he give guidance to Hillary on how to blow hide 36 million in an essentially uncontested senate re-election in a blue state? Did he have a hand in the "Hey John" smear that targeted Kerry, who had already given a lot and raised more, while ignoring Hillary's (and oh yes, Schumer's) millions? Hmmm. Enquiring minds would like to know.

9. Carville's group messing around in Venezuela, also Bolivia just found out.
I really must be naive and all, you know. I knew about Venezuela and his working against Chavez, but I did not know it was this widespread.

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20040802/hayden

"Early returns indicated an 80 percent majority in favor of repealing the existing hydrocarbons law pushed in the 1990s by the hated Sánchez de Lozada (or "Goni"), whose political consultants were the star liberal Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg and former presidential campaign manager James Carville. The Washington-based Greenberg firm represents British Petroleum, one of the multinationals with billions invested in Bolivia. BP supported the referendum, along with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, as did US Embassy officials, because the possible alternative--an Indian-led revolution--was even worse."

And more from The Nation:

"The Greenberg firm, along with Carville, has done extensive polling of Latin American opinion and consulting for Eduardo Duhalde, whose popular support as Argentina's president fell to 8 percent after repression of antiglobalization protests in the 1990s, as well as Francisco Labatista, the candidate of Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party, which sent armed forces to quell the 1995 Zapatista uprising before being defeated at the polls.

It appears that the Greenberg-Carville axis attempted to export the Clinton Administration's free-trade policies to Latin America, with disastrous political results. Prompted by popular resistance from Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador and Brazil, however, the Clinton-era policies are being re-examined, from the New Deal tone of this week's Bolivian referendum to the language of Senator John Kerry's platform recommendation for "review" of trade policies."

And here is info about his involvement with Chavez's opponents.

13. Free trade + banana republic dictatorships = 19th century economics
Geez, didn't we learn anything from our ancestors? Propping up third world dictatorships to allow US and multinational corporations to exploit natural resources and cheap labor doesn't get us anywhere. It only causes problems with economies (ours and theirs), human rights violations and foreign policy disaster.

14. A cheery note: What we won....6 governorships, 9 state houses.
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 10:09 PM by madfloridian
"Big Picture
Democrats won six Governorships, and lost none, moving from a deficit of 28-22 to an advantage of 28-22. The gains came in Arkansas, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio.

In state legislative bodies, Democrats control 56 chambers, Republicans control 40.
Two, the Montana House (previously tied) and the Pennsylvania House (previously Republican controlled) are undecided. Democrats took nine legislative chambers, and lost none. The gains came in Indiana (House), Iowa (House and Senate), Michigan (House), Minnesota (House), New Hampshire (House and Senate), Oregon (House), and Wisconsin (Senate). The Iowa Senate was previously tied, and the Oklahoma Senate, previously controlled by Democrats, is also now tied. I believe, however, that the tie in the Oklahoma Senate goes to Democrats, because we have the Governorship there.

Democrats control 3,964 state legislature seats, and Republicans control 3,307. I do not know how many are controlled by third parties, or are currently undecided. Democrats also have a non-southern majority in state legislature seats for the first time in many years."

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/11/15/214418/80

McJoan also mentions this which was at MyDD

"My favorite factoid in the state legislative world: there are 400 member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (that's one representative for every 3090 residents, roughly). We picked up 89 seats in NH to give Dems the majority in the House for the first time since at least 1922.

Chris makes a number of critical points: we have "restocked our bench," with legions of new potential candidates being groomed for higher office; Dems can start to govern progressively in many states; these gains can be built upon for creating a much more Dem favorable redistricting after the 2010 census."

This is the "farm team" Dean talked about when he formed DFA in 04. He is still working for that goal at the DNC.
