So, who SHOULD be Secretary of Defense ?
It should be obvious even without saying, NOT the guy Bu**sh** has chosen.

Suggestions?

2. Jim Baker?
Cause it would have to be a Repug.....or else Bush's head would explode. It's one thing to eat lunch with the opposition....it would be quite another to have a Democrat "fix" Iraq for him.

3. Can they find a Republican with actual military experience
that isn't in Jail????

I would suggest William Cohen or Sam Nunn or Tom Kean.

8. William Cohen gave Clinton Somalia and ignored Rwanda....
I think this is too serious so they've got to do better than that, ESPECIALLY after Rumsfeld!......I mean, let's not scrape the bottom of the barrel, now.

16. Somalia was Les Aspin's doing
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 03:57 PM by new_beawr
and as far as Rwanda goes, I don't think you can lay the blame at the Secretary of Defense's feet

Cohen, well, more Perry.....ran our involvement in the Balkans exceptionally well.......

27. You are right about Somalia and Rwanda.....but I disagree with your evaluation of Cohen......
In terms of the Balkans, this was a NATO intervention, not a U.S. led one, except for the fact that Wes Clark just happened to be NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, and therefore the action was US led in that sense. But remember that it was Gen. Clark threats to molosovic of ground troops and low flying helicopter that did the trick.....not the 79 days of bombing from high altitude which was Cohen's plan....cause he didn't want U.S. Casualties because Cohen felt that they couldn't "chance" that after Somalia. Instead more civilians died than had to under Cohen's insistence. BTW, that's why Clark got the boot from Cohen; because he threatened Molosovic with ground troops.

23. Besides Aspin being Sec Def
during the Somalia debacle, it was started by the Chimps daddy. He was the one who sent the troops in in the first place.

7. Clark?
I know he's the wrong party, but I have a short list of people I'd trust and, quite frankly, I can't think of one with an (R) after his/her name.

By the way, I happen to think that Clark is the right party and that we just happen to have the wrong party in the White House! ;-)

9. Your analysis sounds right....only problem is that Wes Clark might
try to "fix" George Bush BEFORE he started on Iraq. Wouldn't be pretty in a time of "BI-partisanship"....or whatever this short lived charade is currently being played.

24. Well that and the fact that Clark can't be Def. Sec. until 2010.
Federal codes requires the Def. Sec. to be a civilian - and retired from active-duty service for at least 10 years.

Clark's only been retired for six.

:hi:

18. Wes Clark is not eligible to hold the position
By statute the secretary must be a civilian who has not served in the active component of the armed forces for at least 10 years (10 USC Sec. 113). Clark retired in 2000.

20. Thanks for pointing that out.
Hmmm. I wasn't aware of that and, quite frankly, I'm not sure if I agree with it. I think I understand the purpose, but it seems to me that in this day and age, a 10 year gap gives too long for people to be wooed by the forces of the dark side (defense contractors, etc.) I mean these people have to do something during these ten years and their expertice is in the military, after all.

He's capable. He's trusted. I think he's a Republic.

You may not like him all that much - or maybe you do. He's been pretty much non-controversial. And he's been retired long enough to qualify beyond the ten year rule.

32. Gen. Eric Shinseki (retired)
Gen. Shinseki is by far the best choice for Secretary of Defense. He was spot on regarding the perils of Iraq and is very bright.

Another good choice would be Gen. Anthony Zinni (retired). I'd like Gen. Wesley Clark (retired) as well but as he has entered electoral politics, it would be best to keep him out of such a technocratic position.

Preferably a Texan...

Someone with vast experience in running the defense establishment...

And a lackey of Dead-eye Dick...

So who's running Halliburton these days?
