Maine Caucus Info (Waterville, ME) Attn: Dean Fans!
Hi all!!!

Just got back from the caucus in Waterville, ME.

Big change from 2000! Back then, 45 people showed up. Today, at least 700 and perhaps more!!! The organizers had not even set up a microphone, as they weren't expecting a crowd. Instead, a LARGE group of citizens who wanted to get George Bush out of office ASAP. Plus, as a special surprise, Howard Dean showed up IN PERSON to speak for 10-15 minutes (the alloted time for speeches)!

First was the round circle, where people went to pick up info on their candidates. I will be really surprised if Dean doesn't win here, as a LOT of people were there to push & vote for the good doctor. Kucinich people were hitting everybody with information (including my favorite give-away of the day, a 4-page newspaper with "Fear Ends Hope Begins" in large bold letters that summed up Kucinich's campaign really well I thought!!!) There were a lot of folks hoofing for Kerry, Clark & Edwards also.

Then I registered, picked up my ballot, and went into the auditorium to join the caucus. There were elections for committee positions, and then the speeches by the candidates or the candidate designate.

First up was a speaker for Kucinich (I'm bad with names...he was from the Boston area, and had stumped for Jerry Brown in '92). He was very eloquent on Dennis' position on Iraq, Nafta, and especially Universal Health Care. I was pleased he really detailed out the Health care issue. He was very well received, and energized us Kucinich folks.

Next was Sam Shapiro (? Maybe I'm wrong on that?) who discussed General Clark. He really concentrated on Veteran's issues most of the speech. Another person appeared later with another 5 minutes, where the speaker emphasized Clark's ability to take down Bush, and heavily concentrated on the southern thang (i.e. how a Yankee doesn't have a chance).

Next was a 16 year old junior from Waterville who waxed DARNED ELOQUENTLY for John Edwards. Kinda sad when I realize I could never be as good a speaker as this kid was today! He was VERY passionate about Edwards, and laid out Edward's stand on the issues and Edward's electibility (i.e. the southern thang again). But, in a very sincere delivery...if Edwards can inspire people like this kid to be so passionate about him, then he's certainly doing something right!!!

Then, a big surprise, Howard Dean showed up IN PERSON here in our little ol' burg of Waterville, Maine! Everybody stood, excited to have the man who re-invigorated the Democrat party speaking to us! He spoke for 5 or 6 minutes on Health Care & his record on the issue, fiscal responsibility, and Iraq. He then took questions for another few minutes (quite a ballsy move with a crowd of 700+!!!). Not all were softballs either, as the person who asked Governor Dean about whether he'd drop the military budget (Dean said he wouldn't, but he would switch it to Port Inspections, etc, instead of wasting it on Star Wars & the such...an honest answer from an honest man I thought).

Finally, Rep. McGovern (not George!) from Massachusetts gave a solid stump speech for John Kerry. He emphasized Kerry's integrity, and mentioned Iran/Contra (in which Kerry led the fight to bring out the info about it), Vietnam, and Iraq. He listed many achievements about Kerry, and really spoke highly of him. A very good speech (but even he had to say it was no fun following Dr. Dean!!!).

A great bunch of candidates (where was Sharpton by the way?). I have thought long and hard over who I think would be best to be President. I like all the candidates, but in my heart, Dennis Kucinich is the one closest to my views on almost every issue. I also really like Dean also, so it was a very hard decision to make. I will (of course!!!) support whoever is the nominee against Bush in November. ANYBODY BUT BUSH!!!!

perkypat23 out!!!

3. As Maine goes, so goes the nation
was an old phrase they used when you Maineiacs voted early in presidential elections. I sure hope that old phrase holds true this year! Thanks for an inspiring report!

15. There's a revised version of that phrase
As Maine goes, so goes Vermont.

That would probably be more accurate if Dean wins in Maine.

That saying is from when Maine and Vermont were the only states to vote against FDR and for Alf Landon in 1936.

20. I was referring to the large turnout
and the obvious concern the people of Waterville have about ousting Bush from the Presidency. I think you'll agree that a large turnout in the GE will spell doom for the Chimp.

28. Hopefully
I was really just looking for a way to use that saying.

It is good that so many people are turning out to vote in the democratic primaries and caucuses because clearly almost all of those are at least seriously considering voting for the democratic nominee even if they are independents.

6. Yeah, I was pretty stoked...
Edited on Sun Feb-08-04 04:15 PM by perkypat23
Edited for really stupid spelling mistake

The large turnout was the best part...I arrived ten minutes before one, and had to drive around to find a parking space...the place was already packed. Seeing all these people focused on getting George Bush out of office...it was quite inspiring!!!!

10. I continue to be impressed by the record turnouts at EVERY primary
That's the biggest news of all.

The biggest underlying story of this primary season with voters is not so much any particular candidate IMO, it is the anger with Bush and the direction this country is headed. People are pissed. These turnouts are astonishing! This has to be keeping Rove awake at nights.

Bush is in DEEP SHIT if this keeps up into the general election. And I think it will.

24. Methinks you are correct sir!!
I think that people are PISSED!! Many that have never before paid alot of attention or figured all pols are crooks so what is the point in voting.

As was said 60+ years ago:

"I fear that we have awakened a sleeping giant
and filled him with a terrible resolve"

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto
Empire of Japan
December 7th, 1941

The sheeples may be arising. We can only hope!!

7. great report
I looked up your town in my atlas and saw you have around 17,000 people all told. Was your caucus one of many in your town or the only one?

9. I'm pretty sure it was the only one for Waterville
So perhaps the percentage could have been higher (jeesh, I'm beginning to bum out!). Still, I can be heartened by the percentage increase over last time!

14. actually it still is quite good
The 17k includes children, other non voters, and Republicans. Assuming that half the voters are Dem that would make maybe 5000 people which gives you a 14% turnout. Not bad for a caucus.

17. Yeah, especially as...
...people at a caucus have to stick around for a couple of hours (ours went for 2 1/4 hours). It's not like just popping in and voting which is relatively quick, one has to put aside a good portion of their afternoon (i.e. care more than a little bit!).

Thanks for putting the numbers back in perspective...I've sorta been obsessing since that earlier post!!!!

11. So it was essentially a matter of filling out a ballot after
everyone had spoken?

Was there any "horse trading" the way there was in Iowa, or did you just fill out the ballot and go home?

21. Thanks for the insider info, perkypat!
And I sure hope you regain your strength really soon!

Reading your report, I envied you your experience.

I'm dreading my caucus, as I know I'll be the only one there supporting Dennis, and I'm sooo tired of being the Lone Ranger I could shriek! I'll have to be really pumped up, and that's hard to do when your sick and exhausted. Wish I could have been there iwth you, instead!

Thanks again for the effort to post here!

Maine likes insurgent reformers: Jerry Brown won there in 1992.
Good luck to Dean!

29. Dean won 100% of the vote in Kenduskeag
We only had 5 caucus goers this year but had no attendees in 2000. Only 1 dlegate to the state convention from our tiny town.

30. Welcome to DU!
Always good to see another Maine Democrat. :)

My town's delegates went 100% to Kerry. We had 12 people in attendance and 2 absentees. The 2 absentees were Dean votes. The other 12 were for Kerry. So our 3 delegates are pledged to Kerry.

Kerry won in our town big time. In a caucus of 20, 18 more than the last caucus in 2000. Kerry took 10 votes. WooHoo!
