Candidate reportedly has dropped out of the race
AURORA -- Charges against GOP Kane County Board candidate Brett Schepp apparently have forced him to drop out of his race for the 3rd District seat.

A Kane County grand jury handed up indictments of Schepp on multiple counts of sexually abusing minor girls, the Kane County state's attorney's office announced Friday. Schepp, 36, of the 400 block of Linden Avenue, was indicted on charges of criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and unlawful delivery of alcohol to a minor.
Schepp is the GOP candidate in the 3rd District, which runs across the near southeast and near southwest sides of Aurora. He and his Democratic Party opponent, Arlene Shoemaker, are neighbors.

Wiggins said he and party officials were notified Friday of the charges at the same time as everyone else. Wiggins, however, said he had heard unspecific "rumblings" about Schepp
"Then all of a sudden, this came up today," he said.
Republican Party officials circulated an e-mail to GOP candidates early Friday afternoon, asking candidates not to comment on the situation and refer all questions to the county committee.

Schepp has been involved in neighborhood politics for some time and was a vocal supporter of Richard Irvin's mayoral campaign against Tom Weisner in 2005.

In filing to run for the 3rd District County Board seat this year, Schepp submitted 28 signatures on two nominating petitions, one of which was circulated by Irvin. Irvin could not be reached for comment on Friday.
Prosecutors said Schepp knew the victims beforehand, but would not say how he came to know them.
Kane County Assistant State's Attorney Justin Fitzsimmons said Schepp is charged with seven acts of sexual penetration with the girls. He also is charged with three counts of sexual contact with the girls, including fondling a girl's breast, Fitzsimmons said.
All of the charged incidents occurred in Schepp's home, Fitzsimmons said.
If convicted, Schepp faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 34 years in prison, prosecutors said.
