War hero blasts Republican 'slime machine'
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - When then-U.S. Sen. Max Cleland ran for re-election in 2002, his Republican foe ran ads that linked him with Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. The Vietnam War hero and triple amputee says such tactics, which cost him his office, won't work this year.

"To run against an incumbent Republican is to face the Republican slime machine, which has done more discredit to American democracy than anything I know," the Georgia Democrat said Monday while campaigning in Nevada on behalf of Democratic congressional candidate Tessa Hafen.

Cleland, a former head of the Department of Veterans Affairs, spoke about veterans' issues at Hafen's campaign headquarters in Henderson.

Hafen, challenging GOP Rep. Jon Porter, has battled attack ads from Porter's campaign that she calls "sleazy." They imply that she's a carpetbagger even though her family has been in Nevada since the 19th century.
