ENOUGH! Instead of the 12 traitors, here are the 34 AMERICANS
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 10:14 PM by WildEyedLiberal
There's been more than enough talk on DU of the 12 traitors who voted for torture, so I thought I'd highlight the 34 who did NOT. It is sad that we live in a world where we must celebrate a Senator for opposing TORTURE, but I for one think that their conscience should be recognized.

Here they are:

NAYs ---34

Akaka (D-HI)
Baucus (D-MT)
Bayh (D-IN)
Biden (D-DE)
Bingaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-CA)
Byrd (D-WV)
Cantwell (D-WA)
Chafee (R-RI)
Clinton (D-NY)
Conrad (D-ND)
Dayton (D-MN)
Dodd (D-CT)
Dorgan (D-ND)
Durbin (D-IL)
Feingold (D-WI)
Feinstein (D-CA)
Harkin (D-IA)
Inouye (D-HI)
Jeffords (I-VT)
Kennedy (D-MA)
Kerry (D-MA)
Kohl (D-WI)
Leahy (D-VT)
Levin (D-MI)
Lincoln (D-AR)
Mikulski (D-MD)
Murray (D-WA)
Obama (D-IL)
Reed (D-RI)
Reid (D-NV)
Sarbanes (D-MD)
Schumer (D-NY)
Wyden (D-OR)

Edit: If any of these are your Senators, please call them or send them a letter to let them know that you appreciate their stand against torture and for the Constitution. You KNOW they're going to be inundated with sewage from freepers accusing them of being un-American and pro-terrorist, so PLEASE call/fax/write/email them and let them know that you think they did the right thing.

Neither Senator from the "Live Free or Die" state voted NAY.

Unless I misread he list.

Then there was that bit. That's nearly as good as the Colbert backwash comment and teh survey about him being 32% unfavorable.

50. You'd think if he was a corporate tool he'd reverse how he voted...

To try and guarantee that he'd pass the thing and still have a way to say he was "against" it.

I guess in this case he wasn't trying to serve the corporations, but to serve himself. The way he voted, he had an opportunity to be on "the winning side" at least oncd (where it counted) on each side.

This is why it's hard to know if all of these guys votes aren't just theater IF a fillibuster never happens. If they know that there is going to be no fillibuster because they don't have to count the votes, they know that there is no REAL cost of what happens in the fillibuster if tacitly they are "supposed" to allow this to pass. So if they know that not enough votes are going to be had to do an actual fillibuster and yet they feel they need to do it to get votes from their constituency, then they can all be posturing, except for the few that feel that not fillibustering in their constituency won't be costly to them and in their cases vote against the fillibuster.

What it gets down to, is that we need to have Democrats in EVERY area demand a fillibuster of certain bills like this one, so that no Democrat feels safe in not voting to fillibuster bills such as these. Nebraska and Louisiana Dems, could you help communicate that message to Nelson and Landrieu?

Then it will be hard for the DLC or other "corporate influenced" Dems to make this tradeoff to suit the special interests that control them. They either have to lose votes in their constituencies or have the vote go against these bribing lobbyists' wishes.

We have 10 Representatives to the House. 9 of them voted against the the idea that the government can torture anyone it wants and hold them indefinitely without a trial and even without telling them what the charge against them is. (One Rep didn't show for the vote, sigh!)

29. Like I said, the argument to legalize torture because of this scenario is
Irrelevant. You would make the choice I outlined. I would make that choice, and no I don't know which I would choose.

That's no reason to legalize torture, suspend Habeus, and all the other evil in this bill.

I reject your premis that such a scenario is in any possible way justification for a free pass for war criminals who indiscriminately tortured people.

There are other forums for people who think like that.

I have to give credit where credit is due. Yeah, she voted for cloture but we didn't have enough to sustain a filibuster anyway, and she did do the right thing and voted AGAINST torturing human beings (the thought still makes me sick to my stomach). and that's what the second vote was. She should have voted NO on both of them. If enough folks did that, we'd have not lost our Democracy yesterday. When I saw the top of the page, I felt as you did, but seeing her voting for cloture, I got reminded why I probably will be voting for Todd Chretien instead in November. Had it not been for Cindy Sheehan threatening to run against her in the primary, she probably would have voted the same way in the Alito vote too (voting for cloture). Had she been like Lieberman and flipped us off anyway, we might have had Cindy Sheehan join the ranks of Ned Lamont in November.

53. Some of those great Americans - I want to give them Committee Control
Some of them will do some great things to help turn this country around. So if I have to vote for Tom Carper (clearly not on the list nor doesn't realize that when someone loses a democratic primary you support the winner) because I want to give these 34 Senators who held their ground the chance to turn this country around.

It's not about floor votes, it's about committees. And it would be nice for 2 years to have Leahy running the Judicary because the last time he had the chair he kept 10 Activist Judges from ever getting a floor vote. And you can be assured that none of the Gang of 14 will get a seat on that committee

I was proud that Joe Biden did the right thing but sorely disapointed with what Carper has been doing. But we're stuck with Carper in Delaware and I'm not putting a republican in office.

The one bright side with Menendez, Lautenberg and also Sherrod Brown is that all three of them give me hope for trying to end this war altogether. I think if we could get control - all 3 will be a major bonus to helping that get done. I was impressed with Menendez's creditials from his work in the House.
