28. And how will we benefit by helping to put a Rethug in office who
voted exactly the same way on this bill? But worse on a myriad of other bills?

I don't follow your reasoning. The time to get on his case is after the general election, after we have majorities in the House and/or Senate. Not before.

If Ted Kennedy had been head of Judiciary, do you think this bill would have ever made it out of committee? No way!

Hold your nose, vote for Nelson, and tell yourself that you're really voting for Ted Kennedy, Patrick Leahy, and the other Dem Senators who will head major committees if incumbants like Nelson keep their jobs and we win a handful of other seats.

Then we can get to work on investigating the hell out of the Bush administration.

25. The names:
~snip~

Final passage of the torture/detention bill was 65-34.
~snip~

Twelve Democrats voted in favor, 1 Republican and 1 independent voted against (there may be one or two errors because I compiled the list while listening to the vote):

Democrats in favor (12) - Carper (Del.), Johnson (S.D.), Landrieu (La.), Lautenberg (N.J.), Lieberman (Conn.), Menendez (N.J), Nelson (Fla.), Nelson (Neb.), Pryor (Ark.), Rockefeller (W. Va.), Salazar (Co.), Stabenow (Mich.).

Republicans against (1) - Chafee (R.I.).

Jeffords (I) voted against.

29. Because if Nelson keeps his seat, and we get a handful more,
then we'll have people like Ted Kennedy and Patrick Leahy in charge of Senate committees and a bill like this would never make it out of committee. Get it? We'll have people issuing subpoenas and investigating and exercising oversight vis a vis the Executive branch -- the way Congress has always functioned throughout history -- until now.

It's critical that we not lose ANY seats now -- instead, we have to pick up a few. So hold your nose and vote for the guy -- and imagine you're voting for Ted Kennedy instead. Because that's what you'll really be doing.

I'm seriously conflicted. As disgusted as I am by Sen. Nelson - AGAIN - there is no way I could vote for Harris.

I am a bit confused by his vote on this, though. He voted aye for the amendments, then when push came to shove, voted for the final bill.

.Sigh. Politics? Doesn't want to appear "Soft on Terra?"
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/n000032/votes/

Reminds me of the IRW, and the calls coming into his office were something like a gazillion to one against - and he voted for it. Remember at the time reading that the reason was something along the lines of he had to consider those who hadn't called, too. (I really went WTF!? on that one.)

34. In this case, you could be registering your support for the Party's
position -- which was overwhelmingly against the bill -- rather than for that candidate's position on that particular bill.

If you don't vote for Stabenow, you're not doing everything you could do to fight this administration. Sitting out that race doesn't fight the Administration.

If we had someone like Ted Kennedy in charge of Judiciary, this bill would never have gotten out of Committee. That's why we need a majority in Congress. If we control the committees, and exercise subpoena power, we will be able to accomplish a lot -- as opposed to now, when our hands are completely tied.

Vote for Stabenow so we don't lose a current Dem seat -- which is critical if we're to end up with a majority. A majority is what we need in order to be able to fight Bush effectively. Do you really want another two years of powerlessness?

Senator Stabenow,

I have been a solid Democratic voter for 20 years and have been proud to vote for some of the finest politicians this country has to offer. I also voted for you in the 2000 election. I am writing today to tell you that I will not be making that mistake again.

I can understand voting for a more centrist policy, but you have now voted in favor of torturing people. I won't bother detailing the other provisions of this bill curtailing a detainee's right to even try to prove his/her innocence through writ of habeus corpus; it is enough to know that you support cruel and inhuman interrogation techniques on those unfortunate enough to have been born in another country or who happen to have darker skin than yourself.

There are many, many, more people like myself who find themselves not only appalled but literally disgusted by your vote. We will not make the mistake of spending our own vote so foolishly, or so callously.
