Any feel for how rank and file Americans feel about torture issue?
This Congress is so unpopular that a vote for torture might have been a very bad move for them.

I'm not around the rank and file too much - but everyone I know really feels like torture is really, really not the American way.

I'm thinking this might backfire.

1. Rank & File Americans Are MORONS
They care more about their IPOD's and Reality TV Shows than they do about torture. Most people figure since they're good, it basically has nothing to do with them.

People in this country are MORONS. Someday they MIGHT realize the mistakes made, but I'm guessing most are even too stupid to figure that out. We're pretty well fucked methinks.

2. "Huh?"
That's what America would answer if you asked them about this.

They don't have a fucking clue.

4. Congress Unpopular?
Hehe, nope. 95% of them will get re-elected. President is unpopular. Most people don't care about senate/congress (not speaking of most here of course, but "most" in general). We bitch and moan about how much we don't like the people in office then re-elect almost all of them. You'd have to go back MANY years to find an election where 95+% of the incumbants didn't get re-elected.

I think the whole torture thing is sort of out of sight, out of mind. As long as most people don't SEE people getting tortured, they don't feel strongly about it. I agree that most people I know would be strongly against torture, but they don't see it happening.

6. Do you think they have even thought about it? What it means?
Oh, what am I saying? That would mean they would have to think about something.

7. I'm guessing here but,
I'd say 60% to 70% think it's just fine to torture the terrorists. After all, they're guilty of terrorism or we wouldn't have them in custody, and they're less than human to begin with. Besides, they all have information worth beating out of them.

I hope I'm wrong about this, but I bet that I'm not.

8. Just had a discussion with my republican exterminator
He comes every few months to spray for bugs (we have six dogs and cats and fleas can get out of control without him). He says he didn't know about the president being able to decide who is a terrorist and who is not. He says because they don't wear a uniform it is ok to torture them. He said he didn't care if some 12 year old boy gets raped because our enemy is so brutal. It is a small price to pay for security. But he had no come back with torture creating more terrorists or that we were suppose to be a Christian nation.

It's as if he knew some of the facts but not all of them. He kept trying to argue in favor of torture but his heart wasn't in it. He would trail off in the middle of his talking point with a puzzled expression.

10. LOL most moron Americans
are more into what new Latte Starbucks is coming out with. The ONLY way to get the self centered, asleep at the wheel Murkins to wake up is a goddamned draft. When their precious little darlings are at risk to go die in a desert they will wake up.
