I hang my head in shame
My Congressman, Democrat Gene Taylor, Mississippi voted to allow bush to torture. I have bragged on the man in the past and do not understand this vote. He does not have to cowtow to the ignorant asses in this state to get reelected. And he's a veteran. When composure returns, I shall contact my congressman. This really pisses me off. My two neanderthal senators being neanderthal is no surprise, but a fellow veteran voting for this is beyond the pale.

I am ashamed of my party, again.

3. I'm proud of 160 Democrats who voted against torture
I'm proud of the majority of Senate Democrats who are speaking out and voting against it too. I'm ashamed that we've somehow alienated such a large portion of our country that they don't trust our word on this bill or security and choose violence because they don't see any other option.

7. I'm prouder than ever to be
a Democrat. I got an email from my cousin about the Clinton/Bush 9/11 blame crap -- even after all this, she STILL proudly supports Bush & the republicans. It frustrates me to tears. Her reasoning is still that they are the moral religious Christian party.... how can ANYONE possibly believe that anymore?! I wish ours dems would harp on that fact more...

10. No
Because the people who live in those regions don't want anybody from the "outside" to say anything to them, to begin with. And as often as not, when a particular issue comes up, they are the ones fighting the overall Democratic Party view as well. Many a rural DUer is pro-gun, anti-tax, pro-voucher, anti-minimum wage, etc. etc. I'd bet some of the ones who are silent right now differentiate torture from "alternate interrogation" as well. The only thing I know to do is to win both Houses so we have a larger voice in the national debate and more power to set agendas.

2. That's the problem BossHog
We've got to figure out why people like Gene Taylor made this vote and challenge the specific thinking behind it. It does no good to bash him personally. When we figure out how to change his mind on some of these fundamental issues, then we'll have the key to changing the minds of folks who vote in people like Trent Lott and George Bush.

4. Your shame is shared!
My Navy vet brother is appalled and my vet niece and nephew (Marines) can't even believe it. I am horrified at DEMS who cast the cloak of morality into the wind so needlessly. You expect it of republicans. :eyes:

5. When pictures of some of our kids
being tortured by terrorists are released, the "conservatives" in this country will receive talking points from the grand ole party. "They are all volunteers."

I think a bill to bring back slavery would get the gop another hunk of votes from some of our fine upstanding american citizens.

6. Although I am from Pittsburgh, I know of Rep. Gene Taylor.
I became aware of him a few years ago via the televised congressional hearings looking into the intelligence failures which allowed the Bush administration to play the WDM card during the lead up to the Iraq War. Rep. Taylor's eloquence and statesmanship shone brightly during his remarks and questions. I, too, am disappointed he did not take a stand against the detention bill.

9. Most of the time
I am very proud of Gene and I'm thankful to have him as a congressman because I know the neanderthal "christian" republicans that are just salivating for him to slip and fall so they can replace him. But this vote was a heart breaker. He is an excellent speaker and does have a good record of publicly and loudly kicking bush's ass. As a fellow vet he now owes me one.

12. I'm not ashamed, but I'm terribly disappointed.
I *would* be ashamed if I supported this Official Torture Policy. But I didn't, and I don't know of a single DUer who did. However, I am sadly, terribly disappointed in the Dems who, like Gene Taylor, Harold Ford, et al., voted for this horrible bill.

It's one thing to be a blue Dem in a red state, like Gene Taylor or Harold Ford, and have to vote for SOME things that make the rest of us wonder, WTF???? Some of the tax breaks, for example, or boosting military spending, or even voting for the IWR (!!). There are issues over which reasonable people can differ.

TORTURE IS NOT ONE OF THEM. It boggles the mind to even think that for one second, torture would become the official policy of the United States Government. And yet it has. When did it become necessary to vote FOR TORTURE to get elected in a red state??? When did it become necessary to put completely aside one's humanity to get elected in a red state?

And so I have very mixed emotions about this. Yes, it is more important than ever to take back the House and Senate, and the White House as well. But my God, my God, what kind of human being votes to make torture the official policy of the United States??? What the hell kind of Democrat votes for that??? Yes, I have mixed emotions. I certainly understand the reactions of many DUers to slam the Dems who voted for this travesty. But I also understand the need for Dems to reclaim Congress and the White House. But I think I'm going to be sick over it.
