Cultivating Terrorism - Conservative Failure #5

It's official. US intelligence agencies have finally acknowledged the inescapable reality: the conservatives' failed occupation in Iraq has stoked the terrorist threat -- generating recruits for increased terrorism across the globe.

The White House and leading conservatives are desperate to keep the lid on this reality. Make no mistake ... the fiasco in Iraq is a direct consequence of catastrophic conservatism. Consider how these hallmarks of conservative standard operating procedure have failed in Iraq, and fueled the terrorist threat:

Undercutting Government: Conservatives scorn for government solutions led them to neglect all but the military phase of our government's full mission in Iraq. They rushed our troops to war, and then stranded them, utterly ill-equipped to win the peace and build a thriving democracy. They skimped on the government planning, diplomacy and expertise needed to get the job done effectively.

Displacing Experts with Zealots: Instead of sending experts on reconstruction, conservatives recruited ideologues. Ignorant of the language, the culture, the day-to-day reality of the country they came to rule, conservative cronies spurned allies, shut down "hearts and minds", and lost control of the country.

Forcing Risky Privatization: The second largest army in Iraq after the Americans was made up of private contractors. Their focus on profits compromised troop security, eroded Iraqi trust, and siphoned tax-payer money to executives who are unaccountable to voters for their waste and lack of results.

If progressives had an echo chamber to match conservatives, these realities would create a drumbeat -- far beyond partisanship -- for cleaning out the stables in Washington.
