Bush to Release Part of Intel Assessment
By BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

President Bush on Tuesday said it is naive and a mistake to think that the war with Iraq has worsened terrorism, disputing a national intelligence assessment by his own administration. He said he was declassifying part of the report.

"Some people have guessed what's in the report and concluded that going into Iraq was a mistake. I strongly disagree," Bush said.

He asserted that portions of the classified report that had been leaked were done so for political purposes, referring to the Nov. 7 midterm elections.

Bush announced that he was ordering parts of the report declassified during a White House news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Portions of the document that have been leaked suggest that the threat of terrorism has grown worse since the Sept. 11 terror attacks and the war in Afghanistan, due in part to the war in Iraq.

4. Well just check with the experts at free republic
they'll tell you that terrorism is just about all wrapped up and will be squashed by their great leader and vice leader. The NIE is no doubt just liberal propoganda designed to make an idiot and a liar look like an idiot and a liar. No wait, that's not what I meant.

6. And it seems like only yesterday that this came from the WH...
Oh wait, it was just yesterday.

White House admits Iraq fuels extremism

"GREENWICH, Connecticut (AFP) - The White House acknowledged Monday that Iraq was among several factors that "fuel the spread of jihadism," but said that winning the war would dishearten potential terrorists.

Spokesman Tony Snow sought to challenge news reports on Sunday about the latest National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq and terrorism, which represents the comprehensive consensus findings of the 16 US intelligence agencies.

"It assesses that a variety of factors, in addition to Iraq, fuel the spread of jihadism, including longstanding social grievances, slowness of the pace of reform, and the use of the Internet," he told reporters.

"And it also notes that should jihadists be perceived to have failed in Iraq, fewer will be inspired to carry on the fight," the spokesman said as US President George W. Bush traveled here for a political fundraiser..."

So now we can all understand. The Iraq war fuels "extremism". The Iraq war fuels "the spread of jihadism", but the Iraq war does not fuel terrorism.

Thanks Tony, it's all so much clearer now.

11. I think he meant two different sentances, which were.........
"It is naive to think" and "The war with Iraq has worsened terror".
This makes much more sense and we all know how he bungles his lines.

12. No problem, Mr. Bush
I was called "naive" in an editorial of my own local newspaper for thinking the invasion of Iraq had anything to do with oil, so I'm used to being derided in those terms. But as to the NIE, why not declassify the whole thing, and let the American people see it for themselves and draw their own conclusions? Or don't you trust us naive little souls?
