We're so comfortable, we might as well be bubble-wrapped.

6. If ever there was proof of a media that is in collusion with
this administration, it is this example. They are actually playing down these wars at election time, I feel, to benefit the current government. Can't have the people who only pay attention during the election periods thinking there's like ANYTHING going wrong in the Middle East that isn't THEIR fault, now, can we?

Ugh.

124. I SENT MINE
Found this site (DU) through a google search, found this
thread by luck, decided to register on DU just to tell you
that I sent my email to Newsweek

===================
Dear Editors

I cannot believe that you would intentionally deprive the
American public of a chance to weigh the facts by downplaying
the crises in Afghanistan. . . as opposed to telling it like
it is abroad.

If it is true that the covers on foreign Newsweek editions
feature a headline saying: Losing in Afghanistan, while the
American edition features a fluff piece, than I have to ask
how can you in all conscience betray journalism, fair play,
and ultimately the truth by pandering to American political
interests.

I thought you were better than that.

Shame on you.
=======================

in the paper edition (on the website, it says "International Edition" at the top of the page)? What about the op-ed piece by Clark saying that we are not winning?

If someone could compare the paper edition to the website and tell us what actually made it into the US newstand edition, it would be very helpful.
(the Newsweek edition in question wasn't at my supermarket yet. Cover story was about a scandal at HP)

42. Are there ANY decent, professional media outlets with credibility left???
FOX's hatchet job on Clinton and its lies about him are exposed.

ABC runs neo-con fascist propaganda movie and calls it the "official true" story

MSNBC refers to Hugo Chavez as a "dictator"

CBS hires Katie Couric for its evening news anchor

CNN lies about the "yawning boy" story and is exposed on the David Letterman Show

These are only a few; there are tons more. I wonder if anyone is documenting the outrageous lies and distortions of the US media these past 5-10 years. It would make one helluva book!

47. Its just so sad
specially because for the majority of people, if it didn't happen on tv, it didn't happen. I know many women in their fifties through some environmental groups I work with. Most of them are obviously liberal (conservative environmentalist= oxymoron nowadays) but they get all their news from CNN and the one local newspaper (which talks more about local news that national).

I was stunned to find that the whole voter fraud stuff didn't even register with them....

Seriously, for most people, even people that consider themselves fairly up on politics, if it didn't happen on CNN it didn't happen...
And at best CNN is inane garbage about Michael Jackson and Paris Hilton and at worst its propaganda bs....

Here's mine, and thanks for the heads up:

It is both interesting and puzzling that your U.S. cover story is about photographer Annie Liebovitz headlined "My Life In Pictures" with a photo of a mother and her children, while your international editions show an apparent Afghani Taliban fighter captioned "LOSING AFGHANISTAN".

Pardon me, but I think your bias is showing.

Dear Newsweek,

What a shame on Newsweek, that you are "adjusting" the cover story of your magazine in the American region to a fluff piece on Annie Leibovitz, complete with photo of her and her children, yet for the very same issue, the regions of Europe, Asia, and Latin America get the REAL cover story: "Losing Afghanistan".

Your organization KNOWS what the important news truly is, yet "shields" the American public from it by changing the covers, thus catering to the Republican election campaign this fall.

This move is a great dissappointment. There is no excuse for it.

Actually that part is more of a concern to me. Particularly if he named his son after a certain civil war general. Nathan Bedford Forrest was both the founder of the KKK and ought to have been a war criminal for his actions during the American Civil War.

104. Yes, his son is named Forrest - after the General, and his
daughters, Tyler and Brooke, are also named for two of his Confederate heroes - Tyler for Gen. Robert Charles Tyler, last Confederate general slain in battle and Brooke for John M. Brooke, who resigned his US Navy commission and joined the Confederate States Navy where he became a Commander of ordinance in Virginia and a designer of munitions.

George Allen has tried to explain away his Confederacy fixation saying he was merely a student of history rather than a person obsessed.

The media hasn't latched onto this yet, but Forrest, especially, could be the nail in his political coffin.

That is only in the International edition. They cut it out to fit in celebrity photos. The cover is what everyone passing through airports sees. It still is telling that they won't use it.

And and and she takes such great pictures...

I mean her pics have been on the cover of the rolling stone like a brazzilian times.....

Look at all she has done for the careers of our largest export...

It's all about entertainment and to call someone who photographs the famous, nearly famous and mainly inane, her position of prominence in the world of photography, she is basically a really really good Olin Mills portrait snapper, speaks volumes about our culture...

with the Totalitarian nature of the new Imperial Amerika.

One wonders if they went so far as to remove the story from the issue, instead of just the cover.

But that would be TOO Soviet for this early in Amerika's transition into tyrannical Bush-Totalitarianism.

Does anyone know if the story got purged from Amerikan Newsweek, also, or just taken off the cover?

112. My Response to Newsweek
I created a logon to DU for the first time today. I've been reading DU for more than a year, but felt it was time to say something.

This is the text of an email I have just sent to the editor at Newsweek: Letters@newsweek.com

========

Dear Editor,

I am dismayed and alarmed that a major 'news' magazine would pander to the right wing politicians so close to a national election.

And 'pander' is the best word I could come up with for what you have done with your October 2nd issue.

The cover story for your Latin America, European and Asian editions all feature a turban-topped (assumed) Taliban fighter wielding a rocket launcher. The style of the photo renders him almost an heroic figure, if one did not read the headline, that is.

Yet in the U.S., you chose to soft-peddle the story with an ambiguous "Al Qaeda & 'Jihadistan'" banner on the top and Annie Leibovitz commanding the cover.

At first I gave your magazine the benefit of the doubt: perhaps you chose to push a different top story to each region, choosing one of regional interest. However, your cover is identical in all the world, except in the U.S.

You do disservice to the U.S. on two points:

1) You soften and 'hide' the continuing conflict in Afghanistan from the American world picture by keeping it 'out of sight, out of mind.' Yes, you do have the story inside, but we all know that a picture is worth a thousand words and the simple presence of this cover on the nation's newsstands contributes to the collective consciousness, and

2) You simultaneously inform the world of the conflict, thereby creating, or at least increasing, the gap in world view and opinion between the U.S. and the rest of the world. THEY will know, or have in the forefront of their political psyche, that Afghanistan continues to be a problem and that the REAL terrorist threat that Al Qaeda presents is growing. WE will feel all warm and fuzzy that we have such a talented photographer to claim as our own nation's daughter.

...that is, if we are to simply view the cover of your magazine - which many will do without reading the substance within.

The cover sets the emotional tone and prepares the person for the degree of positive or negative news the issue contains. For those who do not read the content, but simply browse the covers of their local newsstands, your magazine will contribute to the cultural belief that everything is okay and that those Taliban folk are nothing to be concerned with.

No one who reaches your level of responsibility does so without understanding this. Therefore, your obvious attempt to soft-peddle Afghanistan to the U.S. while simultaneously slamming it into the psyche of the rest of the world, is nothing less than pandering to the current political regime.

It is disgraceful, disrespectful and potentially dangerous. After all, if we continue to insulate ourselves from the rest of the world, if we continue to peer through rose tinted glass at only those images which are carefully selected by those who would remain in power, the world will grow more dangerous by the day.

You cannot raise your children on Care Bears and Tellitubbies to age 18 and then throw them into the real world and expect them to thrive, or even survive. Similarly, you cannot insulate and pacify the nation and then expect us to respond appropriately.

The result is that the people will only respond in the fashion YOU and your ilk desire.

But then, that IS the point, isn't it?

======

...for all the good it will do.

Get out and vote this November, your ballot is the ONLY way we can create change in government OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people.
