ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A national black Republican group is running a radio ad accusing Democrats of starting the Ku Klux Klan.

The ad also claims the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican, a claim challenged by civil-rights researchers.

The ad features one woman telling another: "Dr. King was a real man. You know he was a Republican."

The ad goes on to say Democrats helped pass and enforce Jim Crow laws that kept blacks and whites in the South separate.

In the ad, the woman goes on to say, "Democrats passed those black codes and Jim Crow laws. Democrats started the Ku Klux Klan." Her companion replies, "The Klan? White hoods and sheets?"

5. What they aren't telling you....
1) Today's Republicans are yesterday's Southern Democrats who were segregationists.
2) In those days the Republican party was much more liberal than it is today. All the Nelson Rockefeller Republicans are gone - replaced with the WingNut Republicans of today.

So it's all a clever lie that counts on you not to know anything about history or the civil rights movement.

6. Actually, Democrats did pass and enforce Jim Crow laws .
Then when the better angels of the party, led by Lyndon Baines Johnson, decided to rectify these most egregious sins, the Southern Democrats migrated to the Republican party, as part of the Southern Strategy implemented under Nixon. The Republican party actively fostered racism in the South to get votes, and they succeeded quite well. The ad doesn't tell you that.
