Kerry statement on Intel Report that says Iraq action creating terrorists
“The National Intelligence Estimate provides jarring confirmation that the disastrous policy in Iraq is a giant recruiting poster for terrorists and it is weakening our hand in the war on terror. Terrorist organizations from Al Qaeda to Hezbollah are thrilled that we are bogged down in Iraq, even as the Administration misleads America with fear and sloganeering.

“The truth is clear: Rather than being the central front in the war on terror President Bush claims, Iraq is a fuel depot for terror fanning the flames of worldwide jihadism. Incompetence and ideology has left us with more terrorists in the world who want to kill Americans.

“Make no mistake, there is no way to regain lost ground in the war on terror without redeploying out of Iraq and making Iraqis stand up for Iraq. We must set a deadline to get out of Iraq and refocus on the real war on terror.”

This was the argument Kerry had in April when he asked for a timetable to withdraw troops from Iraq. This is the argument he made on the floor of the US Senate in June when he and Sen. Feingold forced a discussion on withdrawing troops from Iraq under a timetable. This is the same argument he used last month in a speech at Faneuil Hall when he said that our contuned presence in Iraq is fueling, not undermining, support for the insurgency.

He's still making that argument. This report backs up what he said and reinforces the idea that we need to get out of Iraq because our presence there is hurting our own goal of reducing terrorism.

1. McCain on Face the Nation today said he didn't know about the report!
Said he's not on the security committee so he isn't privy to the report. What an idiot. Especially since the info is already in the hands of the MSM!!!

pointsw memo yet.

He'll have a suitably weaselly comment in a few hours.

14. And Frist said the same thing on This Week
He hasn't read it yet, he didn't have access, it's classified, etc etc. If Kerry had it, certainly the majority leader would.

I think this is a new RW tactic. When they are faced with an unanswerable question, they simply say they haven't read it, they don't know about it, etc. Cheney used it on MTP last week. My question is, if you are the Vice President, shouldn't you have read these things? What is a higher priority, hm? Do your homework! But of course it's just a dodge so that they don't have to answer sticky questions.

3. Unlike Kerry, most Democrats are afraid to bite the bullet on Iraq
They fear to be attacked by the GOP for being "soft on (fill-in the blank)."

11. Cool! This is in the NYT
“The National Intelligence Estimate provides jarring confirmation that the disastrous policy in Iraq is a giant recruiting poster for terrorists,” Senator John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, said in a statement.

Check out Frist's comment, he's added more words to "fighting them over there."

17. Release the NIE

Negroponte says U.S. not at higher risk

By KATHERINE SHRADER, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - National Intelligence Director John Negroponte acknowledged Monday that the jihad in Iraq is shaping a new generation of terrorist operatives, but rejected characterizations stemming from a leaked intelligence estimate that the United States is at a greater risk of attack than it was in September 2001.

Rather, he said, the high-level assessment from the nation's top analysts doesn't "really talk about" an increased threat inside the U.S. border.

Snip...

But Bush administration officials, including Negroponte, are contesting the media accounts, saying they describe only a portion of the conclusions and therefore distort the analysts' findings on trends in global terrorism.

Snip...

Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said the American people should be able to see a public version of the report and draw their own conclusions about its contents. So far, he said, the public discussion has given the "false impression" that the National Intelligence Estimate focuses exclusively on Iraq and terrorism.

Release the report (before it's manipulated)!
