Concern about Noam Chomsky's recent rise in sales
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 06:41 AM by Freedom_from_Chains
On checking Amazon.com this morning I see that Noam Chomsky's "Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance" is now the number one selling book since Hugo Chavez recommended it in his speech to the U.N last week. And I suppose that is good as I know I have enjoyed a lot of the material that Noam has written over the years.

My concern is this. Since we are all living in a new world these days, you know post 9-11 and all that, and we no longer have to follow the Constitution and all, in fact conservatives would have us believe that we shouldn't follow the Constitution or we will surly be attacked and large numbers of people will die, is it really a safe thing for Americans to be buying Noams book?

Since all transaction on Amazon are credit card, or PayPal which links back to your credit card or bank account, and since we no longer need court orders to fight terrorism, (Patriot Act), and since Hugo recommended this book, does that not by definition create a list of people who support Hugo since you bought the book he recommended. And since the new definition of a true American is "Your either with us, or agin us," doesn't that make all who bought the book agin us? And if you are agin us, then by definition aren't you then a terrorist?

I know for myself, over the last 4-5 years whenever I buy a book at Borders, B & N, etc, that might in any remote way be controversial, I pay cash. Am I being paranoid or is this the world we live in today?

10. They can eat me. I use my debit card.
I welcome them to do so. They have every word you ever typed here or any where else on the web. I welcome the opportunity to pursue this in the courts or alternatively die as an innocent man when the taze me because they think I am "threat" when I become agitated, which I will. My family would pursue this to the ends of the earth.

12. FEAR OF THE GOVERNMENT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY
WANT. If all the "good Germans" had said "fuck Hitler" what would have happened? The gestapo never would have worked if half the people in Germany were saying fuck you fearlessly. Fear the government, fear our neighbors, be afraid to speak out, worry that our cars will be trashed if we display our feelings on the bumper....they want this and love to see it happening.

15. Do what you gotta do but...
...when one realizes that there is a gestapo, in the personal sense, rather than in a general abstract sense, you have to weigh your actions and make your own decisions. It's not fear or cowardice, it's common sense.

22. Yes, but the point is to
1. Acknowledge there is a potentional problem
2. Initiate discussion of the problem
3. Arrive at a solution or plan for dealing with the problem

To say, "Well, I'm going to run head long into a buzz saw and that'll show'em," is not a plan.

24. It is a better plan than "stay the course." If we all say "fuck you, I
am not going to be afraid of you" the buzz saw will be overwhelmed.

34. Depend which country
Many watch their neighbors get round up and never return an didn't BELIVE what they had heard was happening. The difference if WHEN we have to leave it willbe too late...we will not have any place to go. In the early stages of Hitler many left for the UK/USA, where are we oing to go to?

The day THEY schedule another Constitutional Convention will be the last day of this Republic.

An Amazon-esque computer display somewhere in Washington will read "People who bought 'Whats the Matter with Kansas' also stood a little too close and a little too long next to copies of 'Hegemony or Survival.'

make us afraid to buy the books we want to read. they make us afraid to wear a t-shirt that says 'Peace'. they're making us afraid in soooo many ways to speak our minds and get our message heard. heck, the thought occurred to me early this morning lying in bed, only half awake...i started a thread yesterday for people to buy gas at citgo...i thought they just may make a list of people that do buy gas there. i wouldn't doubt it. our america is GONE...we can't tread lightly...we must make our voices heard before we're silenced forever.

19. You're missing the point about our rights
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 08:35 AM by Warpy
and that is that they can take our rights to read what we want and say what we want only with our permission, that is when we become too timid to buy a book or tell our neighbours how we really feel about the fascists in Washington.

Get that? Do they really have your permission? Are you going to allow them to take away your right to read a book?

Wholesale civil disobedience is the only thing that has a chance of doing away with bad laws, and they haven't managed to pass a law against reading Chomsky as yet. Wholesale disobedience in the 60s and 70s did away with the stupid state laws ageinst cohabitation and it nearly did away with stupid laws against marijuana---until people allowed themselves to get scared.

Remember, they're your rights only as long as you insist on exercising them. They can't take them away. YOU CAN.

I'm not ashamed of buying left-leaning books.

If the government doesn't like it, tough.

We need to all do that, so that there are too many of us to go after.

And If they do start to go after people, I have my escape plan in place. :-)

...You fear retrabution for buying the book and that buy buying the book with a credit card that 'they' the facist asshole occupiers of the White House will come knocking down your door.

That would bw what they would want you to think, its fearmongering in its highest form. Do get shacky in the knees when it comes to any type of confrontation, if they wanted to they would have had the book banned but that would only work against them and insight massive riots. This is NOT Nazi Germany and their would be more then enough people to remind the GOP of that fact.
