Evangelical activists struggle to energize voters
Traditional GOP base jaded over lack of action on issues like gay marriage

Updated: 10:28 a.m. ET Sept 22, 2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Christian conservatives, traditionally a reliable Republican constituency, aren’t necessarily a GOP gimme this time around.

There is an undercurrent of concern that some evangelicals, unhappy that the GOP-led Congress and President Bush haven’t paid more attention to gay marriage and other “values” issues, may stay home on Election Day or even vote Democratic.

“Conservative Christians are somewhat disenchanted with Republicans,” said Kenyn Cureton, vice president for convention relations with the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination with nearly 16 million members.

Religious conservatives are unhappy the Republican-led Congress hasn’t paid enough attention to “values issues,” he said, noting that even a push this summer against same-sex marriage came too late.

“It has not escaped our notice that they waited until just a few months from the November elections to address our agenda,” Cureton said.

1. Liberal evangelicals are disenchanted with the republicans
For no attention to the hungry, needy, or poor.

Unlike the conservative far right evangelicals, they don't wish the country to become a theocracy, rabid right wing style.

2. Boy, they're quick aren't they? They are just now noticing that
their issues, stupid as they are, are only brought up when it's election time.

4. the repubs kept them in line with the abortion stance....still a big issue
alot of people both on the left and right are one issue voters. I know alot of well-heeled democrats that are basically republicans who vote on keeping abortion legal...they're fiscally conservative in every other way. I also know some born again freaks, who's economic policies sound like communism, except they think abortion is murder.

6. I think there's more to it than that.
There are things that even fundies blanch at, and for some of them, torture is one.
