1. Probably
That way they can say that they support the WOT and believe in the security of Americans, by allowing the military and civilian intel services to have the tools that they need to protect the Homeland!!!!

4. The catfight is over so what do they say now? Will they all be on
TV this weekend saying how great this deal is? What is their strategy? Do they have one? Does anyone really care? I imagine the press is ready to jump down the throat of anyone who dares to suggest we shouldn't questions terrorists by whatever means necessary. Looks like Rove got them again!!

6. The repukes very unfortunately have them in a no-win
situation. If they speak out about the torture, they get accused of being "soft" on terrorists. If they don't speak out, they get accused of not having any ideas. As long as repukes control the media and the message, it doesn't much matter what the Dems say or do. It will always be spun negatively.

8. Oh well lets all sign up to be Republicans then. I think this passivity
(of which this post is a mere symptom) is more terrifying than anything else. And the abdication of so-called opposition party of its RESPONSIBILITIES to represent the PEOPLE WHO ELECTED THEM.

There have always been facistic elements. ALWAYS. What's different is the enabling behavior and the crumbling of the political center/ opposition.

10. I'm not saying I agree with the Dems behavior at all. In fact, I hate it.
We desperately need new leadership that doesn't cower in fear. We need principled people to stand up to these thugs. The ones we've got now are so beholden to special interests and so clueless as to why they're even there, it's pathetic.

There simply are damn few politicians who even remember that they've got a constituency beyond their contributors and the lobbyists they see daily. It's all about money and power - getting it and keeping it. Not rocking the political boat is the only strategy they know.

9. That is entirely their fault. When all the brouhaha started, where were
the DEMS? They just sat back and let the Pugs fight it out, knowing full well that the GOP would cover Mr. * ass. If they had joined the chorus loudly and clearly and put true pressure on the GOP to stop the torture, the outcome would be different. I'm so tired of them trying to placate the right wing. Grow some cajones!

12. I fully agree with you. I think the Dems are too damn scared of
what the repukes will say about them or do to them that they've reached the point where they say or do practically nothing. This is a perfect example. Not speaking out loudly about torture is just plain wrong, but they apparently consider it the safest approach. It's all about staying out of the fight and trying to survive politically.

3. If they have no way to stop it, why not vote for it?

It takes away the "dems are soft" meme thrown out by Republicants.

I just want Dems to take back the House and Senate - any way possible.

5. So they should just bend over and take it? I am so ashamed of
my country and my party right now. The Dems could have avoided this by not sitting by and letting them duke it out. They knew that they would capitulate in the end. They should have raised such a ruckus that they didn't dare cave. Just more fence sitting from my party.

11. BC voting "for" something is by definition APPROVING IT. Why not
abstain en masse. Why not engage in attention-grabbing theatrics that get your point across. Why not refuse to play the game and create our own media circus. Theres a LOT of power in nonviolent resistance. But that would mean creativity & a certain amt of willingness to put ones cushy little career on the line.

And the rest of us ought to turn off these dmned computers and start talking to each other face to face... like, say, out in the streets.

13. How does it take away that stupid meme? It's just a lie that GOP relies
on because they know they're the ones who are cowards and frauds of the biggest order. That's why they had their corporate pals buy up most broadcast media in the 80s and 90s. So they can create their own reality.

7. WHO KNOWS. Life in the USA is getting really weird. Have been searching
the internet for some information-- something in depth which at least explains what exactly the legislation says and there sure ain't much out there. Just a lot of yammering about whether Bush is a devil or not. Who cares! He can be Santa Claus' evil twin for all I care.
