Just saw Jesus Camp
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 01:10 AM by joefree1
People for the American Way had a pre screening in Los Angeles tonight. My thoughts ...

Made me very uncomfortable as it mirrored my own experiences as a "Born Again" youth way back in the late Sixties. Although puberty woke me up and got me out of the movement (no way I was gonna be a virgin when the rapture came) I still had a lot of hell paranoia to deal with throughout my teens. Not a lot of Christian compassion is taught then or now.

In the question and answer period after the movie everyone was stunned by the passionate political brain washing going by the camp organizers. This was nothing new to me so I was more startled by people's naiveté.

Still this movie could be a wake up call for liberals, conservatives and most of all the middle of the road moderates. The scene where the camp kids worship a cardboard cut out of George W. Bush is really chilling. Second most chilling scene is in the beginning where the main organizer of the camp wishes her kids can be as dedicated as Palestine kids are in laying down their lives for their God.

Thirdly though I hope this movie is a watershed moment in America. It's a great counter point to the repukes "us versus them" mentality. Hopefully Republicans will ask are we becoming like the "terrorist" in this insane endless hoily war for the morality high ground.

I've seen so many negative, angry posts about the "Jesus Camp" ads on here. I couldn't understand it. I think a lot of people have gotten the impression that it promotes the insanity of those people.

I think that Jesus would disapprove of what those people in the film are doing. But he wouldn't get mad at them. He would, very kindly and humbly, show them the error of their ways.

12. Yeah, that's wierd
Here's this religion built around around a peace loving guy and yet there's all this fear, dogma, and oppresion. In the question and answer part of the meeting the Producers of Jesus Camp said these people are more about the Old Testament the new.

I adore them...

Since 1980 (when I joined) PFTAW has been trying desperately to expose the lines being crossed by the religious right and their attacks on the necessary separation of Church & State, geared for the mainstream... PFTAW has continually has taken on all the rich fundamentalist bullies, and won!! Falwell, Robertson, Dobson, etc. all in OUR behalf....

However, these republican religious zealots just won't go away, it's too profitable for them, and most of us are all asleep... Thank your luck stars there is People For the American Way fighting...Who are these wonderful These PFTAW people? I've been an off and on member since their inception...

Though I would never claim to be part of their true dedication, tirelessly working for our religious freedoms & civil liberties against and the overwhelming forces to stop investigations and exposure of truth...Again, who are these wonderful, caring people...Thank you PFTAW..Though I found it necessary to donate elsewhere recently...Still, PFTAW are and have been fighting for our religious freedoms for decades...Thank you everyone People For the American Way!

I won't ignore any longer...

8. Big Ed had the woman who runs this camp on his show the other
day. She explained all this stuff away. She said they were praying FOR the President..."who doesn't need a prayer?", she asked...and the camera angle made it look like they were worshiping the huge ardboard images of Bush.

She also explained away the war rhetoric as biblical text...course, why the Muslims can't use this excuse when they quote the Koran is beyond me.

10. Marvin Olansky and the radical Presbyterians
I haven't seen the movie but Olansky and the whole Dominionist movement needs to be monitored constantly.

Rushdoony (deceased)
North and Grant and Olansky and so forth.

Rolling Stone's "The Crusaders" is a great article on this as it Conason's "Big Lies" book.

11. "...lay down their life for the Gospel"...?
Heaven forbid should we follow Jesus's teaching of "Turn the other cheek". It's much more fun to go the "tit for tat" route. And isn't it great when adults can send the kids off to the fighting for them!

I thought suicide was an abomination, according to the Bible. (I could be wrong)

God help them!
