Horrible New Anti-stem Cell Ad on TV Last Nite in KC
This ad had a very young woman sitting on her bed. She tells that she sold her eggs to get money. The procedure was very painful and could lead to horrible long term health problems - kidney disease, I don't know what all.

Then the ad says that millions of eggs will be needed for stem-cell research and that young women will be the awful victims.

Whoa?

This is the second really bizarre ad that we have had here - the other one was a ghastly thing about terror - and terrorists coming to get us and destroying all of our freedoms. Shows women in Burqas. Shows all kinds of terroris video. Terror - Terror - Terror.

I can't remember ever seeing ads this horrible. And they are such a bunch of lies.

1. Well if these fucktards were more concerned about our poor ...
she wouldn't have to "sell her eggs to get the money".

2. I have seen that ad!

You are right, it is repulsive.

There is a billboard on I-70 at the Benton curve (eastbound) that says stem cell research will cost US millions. (??) What does that mean? It will bring in biomediocal researchers. I would think that would be an asset. More scientists, more research, more dollars in our local company. Isn't that how it works?

Their lies are disgraceful. Jesus is ashamed.

3. Did you notice who put the ad out? I didn't.
Is it one of the ultra right religious groups here? That has to be where it is coming from.

A lot of moderates are pro stem cell research.

6. Isn't it that Vitae Society?
They have some pretty misleading (lying) ads about abortion too.

I wrote down what that billboard on I-70 says as I drove by today.

VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT #2
MILLIONS FOR CLONING FROM A FEW ELITES
OUR CONSTITUTION IS NOT FOR SALE

:wtf: These fundies are fruitcakes.

13. Argh. it's not going to cost a dime.
The Stowers guy is a zillionaire. the Stowers institute is a non-profit, isn't it? Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures spoke at one of our fundraisers a couple of weeks ago.

15. I was wrong about that sign
It says

VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT #2
MILLIONS FOR CLONING FROM A FEW ELITES
OUR CONSTITUTION IS NOT FOR SALE

But now I am even more confused

17. Idiots. Bet they haven't even read the amendment
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 04:33 PM by dadsblacksheep
It specifically PROHIBITS cloning. But hey, why let a little thing like truth get in the way?

Hypocritical, isn't it, that they are claiming the Constitution is for sale when the group that funded this sign is most likely a RW group, (ie, trashers of the Constitution).

18. They really are idiots
I wonder which part of "NO CLONING" they don't understand. We need to assure them no one wants to clone THEM. LOL

It's also interesting they are apparently willing to turn their backs on "millions" of dollars.

4. Those who oppose stem cell research should sign a pledge
that they will never use any medical advances which come from such research. And those who oppose stem cell research should be locked in the Alzheimer's Ward of a Nursing Home for six months. "Christian" bastards revel in the slaughter of "ragheads" and our troops in Iraq but fake outrage at the use of stem cells for research. Sad, disgusting, pathetic life forms.

5. I agree with you. But this argument has just gotten so far off base
and this kind of ad just proves it.

It's kind of like the abortion debate. I'm sorry but a clump of cells does not a person make.

I wonder how many eggs are discarded naturally each year - must be billions.

8. Remember what DUer kiteinthewind says
She is an RN. She tells people that if this logic is true, if that clump of cells is really a life, then every time a woman menstruates, it's manslaughter. And every time a man masturbates, that is mass murder.

9. Yes! When I see them protest the discarding of unwanted frozen embryos
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 10:44 AM by holboz
then at the very least they'd have some consistency in their arguement. But right now I just see the whole "culture of life" movement as a hypocritical joke.

If this group really wanted to send a good message then they would offer alternative means to an end. For example, a pregnant woman can donate her baby's cord blood, which is FULL of stem cells. Those stem cells could be used to further research or help cancer patients. The cord blood is usually tossed out anyway. If they became an advocate for this sort of alternative instead of creating silly terms like "snowflake babies" and calling stem cell research supporters "murderers" then we might be able to take them a bit more seriously. But right now they're just ANNOYING!

:)

ps. Sorry for the edits and if this lacks clarity. My allergy medicine is making me feel sleepy!

11. How is it pro-life to throw a potential cure in the trash?
That is what makes me so angry about this. Those cells are tossed away if not used for stem cell research.

So is it pro-life to toss out those petrie dishes or to save them and maybe cure a disease?

7. Best reply I have heard yet
to a woman raging on about the evils of stem cell research and falsely claiming that it will allow cloning:

"Oh, don't worry, no one wants to clone YOU."

I about fell out. This crazy fundie woman was going off and a woman who had to be 90 shut her right up by telling her this.

14. What sucks is that in Missouri, it could be illegal
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 12:32 PM by dadsblacksheep
to perform any treatments derived from stem cell research within state lines. Doctors would be felons, and patients will have to travel to another state to get treatment. So even though I am 100% pro stem cell research, I would suffer because of the jerks.

12. This is so stupid. The legislation for Amendment 2 in MO
puts strict safeguards for women in place. Women that choose to donate eggs must be informed of the risks, and if they should happen to have some complications and miss work, they will be compensated for that. There are more, these are just the first two I came up with.

These assholes are just trying to scare people.

Also, I hope anyone that has undergone IVF doesn't fall for this shit. If I'm not mistaken, the procedures for procuring eggs are the same.

16. Saw it. Amazingly cynical lie. Disgusting. McCaskill should ...
... call on Talent to disavow it (and use the opportunity to point out that Talent is against stem cell).
