AOL gains more new customers after going free
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Time Warner Inc. (TWX) on Tuesday said a strategy to offer most of online unit AOL's services for free was making faster-than-expected progress in attracting new Internet users and cutting costs.

Jeffrey Bewkes, Time Warner's chief operating officer, told investors at a Goldman Sachs media conference that its strategy had attracted new users beyond those who were once paying customers of the online service.

Some 40 percent of new users were not former subscribers, Bewkes said. "That means there is demand for AOL beyond the existing base," he said.

In addition, subscribers who formerly paid for AOL services were moving to its free services at a quicker rate than originally predicted by AOL management, Bewkes said.

Even though it's going free, I still don't want a damn thing to do with AOHELL.

1. What's going on with AOL if you are a customer?
We have an account we keep for travel but use Earthlink for DSL/Dialup.

Does this mean the account we now pay for is Free? How does that work?

2. According to the article, they are moving paying customers
to free customers faster than they expected. How long for you? Who knows.

4. Call AOL.
I don't think it's an automatic switch over, you have to call.

6. Thanks....I handn't seen any notice from them...but might have missed it
that I would need to change. They are still just billing me by taking it out of our checking account. Sheesh....I'm probably being ripped off because I didn't know about this...

5. I WAS a paying AOL member
And called them after they published all that member search data online. I told them what fuckers they are and quit my account. They didn't try to "keep" me as a member, probably because they were about to go to free membership. In fact, shortly after I quit, I received an email in my Yahoo account telling me the "exciting news!" that i could remain with AOL FOR FREE!

I also quit my SBC/AT&T account, and told them I would no longer be using them as my ISP because they are a sell out to the NSA. The SBC agent i spoke with was completely unaware of the NSA sell out, and actually asked questions and where to get info about it as she was in the dark about AT&T's cooperation with the NSA to give all member account info, etc.to the government.

Fuck AOL! They are one of the whores of Time-Warner, a media so willing to continue the drumbeat to war for our Fascist Bush Regime.
