US had innocent Canadian Muslim tortured in Syria
Edited on Mon Sep-18-06 11:55 PM by lwcon
No. No more "my country right or wrong."

Would somebody please explain to me how the fear and hate that some Americans have felt since 9/11 makes this ok?

Canadian intelligence officials passed false warnings and bad information to American agents about a Muslim Canadian citizen, after which U.S. authorities secretly whisked him to Syria, where he was tortured, a judicial report found Monday.

Arar, now 36, was detained by U.S. authorities as he changed planes in New York on Sept. 26, 2002. He was held for questioning for 12 days, then flown by jet to Jordan and driven to Syria. He was beaten, forced to confess to having trained in Afghanistan -- where he never has been -- and then kept in a coffin-size dungeon for 10 months before he was released, the Canadian inquiry commission found.

5. Are you saying US was the least culpable???
Edited on Tue Sep-19-06 12:21 AM by lwcon
It seems to me that the US was at least as bad as Syria in this, if not worse for being the "architect" of this action, for sending the man there expressly to be tortured. Or maybe it was that we just didn't have any prison cells available, and Syria had an opening.

6. k&r - while Canadian authorities bear some responsibility,
and those involved will hopefully be held accountable, it is unclear whether the Canadians knew at the time of the US practice of rendition. I just hope this story has legs, and raises the awareness of the average american...perfect timing during the week when the Geneva Convention's survival is at stake...

From the linked article in OP:
Those renditions are often carried out by CIA agents dressed head to toe in black, wearing masks, who blindfold their subjects and dress them in black.

8. Any discussion of interrogation tactics ought to mention Arar & al-Libi
yet see how often cable media pundits and so-called experts (Defense Contractor lobbyists) refer to these two cases.

10. Maher Arar interviewed on CBC radio

Arar Report – Reaction

For Maher Arar, it's been a long time coming. Yesterday Justice Dennis O'Connor finally released his report on how the Syrian-Canadian man ended up being held and tortured in a Syrian prison for more than a year. And more importantly, what role Canada played in his horrific ordeal.

It was four years ago this month when Maher Arar was stopped at JFK Airport in New York, on his way home to Ottawa after a vacation in Tunisia. The US was still on post 9-11 high alert. There he was detained and questioned by US authorities, and that's when his nightmare began.

This morning, as the final chapter is written, Maher Arar joined us from Ottawa with his lawyer Marlys Edwardh.

11. Don't worry
I'm sure that this poor man will recieve a proper and public apology from both governments as well as some sort of financial compensation for his pain and suffering. This nasty incident will probably also cause Bush rethink the whole rendition and torture thing and a new day will dawn for all of us.

12. Oh, gosh
I'm so relieved.

For a minute there, I thought stalwarts like McCain and Graham were going to cave and make a deal with the devil. Whew! Dodged a bullet on that one.
