Bush at UN -- this could be big
Erm, isn't it going to to get kind of, you know, contentious when Bush brings his Torture Talk Tour to the General Assembly?

I don't know the format of these things, but couldn't it get kind of ugly?

1. He's probably counting on it. Or, rather,...
...his handlers are. Nothing will whip Bush's base into a frenzy of Rapture-ready wargasm like seeing their Divinly-annointed President taken to task by the Antichrists at the UN. Yep, the fundie fruitcakes will be writhing on the ground at the thought of 'foreigners' telling our President what to do. They'll be burning down French restaurants and shooting-up Chinese takeaways across America before Shrub has figured out how to get out the door of the General Assembly.

3. I don't know...
These guys usually only miscalculate in war, the economy, well, in everything but politics. But I think this may be a politically dangerous visit to the lion's den.

The only thing I don't know is how much of a forum the rest of the UN, Kofi Annan, etc. will have to speak in a way in which the US media will report it.

It seems like a perfect storm moment for Bush to get bitchslapped: he sent Colin Powell there to lie his ass off at the outset of the Iraq fiasco, and now the most powerful country on earth wants to legally authorize barbarism, and to start gearing up for Operation Armageddon in Iran.

An awful lot of Americans are going to have to be ashamed of this, even if it's only the 57% that don't still think Saddam caused 9/11.

But, you may be right, because they indeed play the strings of the heartland like Hendrix played that upside-down guitar.

5. The GA needs to stand up and walk out
when the Chimp starts to speak. That would send the clearest message of all.

9. They won't.
As usual the world will defer to the vile rulers of the american republic. Lead by the cowardly Europeans, the UN will at best issue veiled admonitions. We here inside the beast, we who are aware and are opposed to the course our nation is on, are on our own.

6. The blogger misunderstood but, the real version sounds bad too
Bush didn't say he'd talk torture at the General Assembly. He said he'd talk freedom and supporting moderates. The next paragraph refers to a completely different subject: domestic politics, namely, the bills in Congress to give the pro torturers the legal tools they need to continue.

Therefore, the proper summary is this:

Bush is going to talk freedom and moderation at the UN, and torture of terror suspects at home.

10. Nope, I understood it fine
I don't expect him to literally ask the UN for the right to torture. He'll talk in abstractions about freedom and civilization, but it's right out in the open that his current agenda is an American hegemony that includes the right to torture, as well as secret prisons, warrantless wiretapping, etc.

For the UN to greet him warmly while he's activily campaigning for such a right at home would be tacit approval.
