2. Gov. Jim Doyle slammed Republican challenger Mark Green
Doyle, Green Square Off In First Governor's Debate
Second Debate Will Be Held Oct. 20

UPDATED: 8:13 am CDT September 16, 2006

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle slammed Republican challenger Mark Green for supporting federal budgets that have grown a massive deficit, but Green slammed back as the two met in their first debate of the campaign on Friday.

TALKBACK: What Do You Think?

Green, a U.S. Rep. from Green Bay, insisted the state has its own deficit that hasn't been cured under the Democratic governor's four-year tenure. Doyle told the audience he has balanced every budget since taking office, despite inheriting a $3.2 billion state deficit that required drastic cuts.

Green said the incumbent hasn't controlled spending and has used funding shifts to mask continuing fiscal problems for the state.

As examples of where to cut spending, Green said he would look at outside contracting done by the state and also at things like a $26 million computer software system for the University of Wisconsin System payroll that hasn't worked.

Doyle responded that the UW contract was signed by a previous governor.
