John Edwards stumps for Democratic nominee Jim Davis

Sep 15, 10:25 PM EDT

MIAMI (AP) -- Former vice presidential candidate John Edwards was the first of several big ticket Democrats slated to show up in the sunshine state Friday rallying for gubernatorial hopeful Jim Davis.

After winning his party's ticket last week, Davis said he received calls from big-name Democrats offering to lend support and do fundraising of their own in Florida.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, both called, Davis said at the Miami-Dade Community College event.

"I think anybody that's running for president is going to come down here, Democrat or Republican," Davis said. "Florida is a critical state for Democrats and Republicans."

Edwards, the former North Carolina senator who was Kerry's running mate in 2004, echoed that sentiment in a brief speech.

The future of the world is at stake in the upcoming elections, Edwards said.
