What we saw today at the WH presser was a desperate criminal

Today's press conference saw the public tactics of a man desperate to shift the laws of once great nation to cover his own misdeeds. As was made eminently clear by Constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley, the Red Cross, when it interviews and reports the result of those interviews of the detainees tortured under orders endorsed by the man at whose desk the buck does, indeed, stop, his crimes will be clear to everyone.

Mr. Bush fears as much as anything a House of Representatives newly energized by a Democratic majority, armed with subpoena power, and conducting hearings with witnesses sworn legally to tell the truth.

Forget the rhetoric. Forget the partisan cheering. These are deadly serious issues.

We have no choice, if the allegations prove, as we know they will, true. We must impeach and remove from office the President, the Vice President, and certain others of his administration. Following the political removal of these criminals from office, we cannot rest.

We must indict.

We must try.

Upon conviction, we must punish. There will be no rehabilitation save the reputation of our once and future great nation. The punishments must be so severe that no one will dare repeat the actions, the hubris, the arrogance - the criminality - of George W. Bush and his gang of thugs. In meting the punishment, as they themselves so love to say, no options shall be off the table.

Yes, what we saw today was the rantings of a desperate criminal.

The original objective came from dick cheney and donald rumsfeld, who were Washington players during the Nixon era, and saw what happened when a president breaks the law and faces accountability for it. I've read quite a bit about this by now. They were bound and determined to fix that if they ever got back in power - to make sure that never happened again. The presidency, they thought, had been neutered - no power. Not like the good old days. And they wanted to do something about that in the worst way. And they have succeeded. In the worst way.

These ARE MULTIPLE high crimes and misdemeanors. If Clinton were guilty of even a fraction of these things, the republi-CONS and CONservatives all over everywhere would be building gallows for him.

I'd be willing to bet that James Baker or some such powerbroker/fixer from bush-the-first has come to little Caligula and told him he's in grave danger of facing war crimes charges. So his idea is to fix the laws, retroactively, to cover his ass and render legal what illegal acts he has authorized, endorsed, and/or called for. SOMEBODY's told him he's in deep doo-doo. And he's probably further agitated because the easy no-brainer, willing (would that be THE "coalition of the willing"?), voluntary rubber-stamp brigade in Congress that's always snapped to attention and obeyed without question - is now balking. He can't even count on that automatic get-out-of-jail card now, thanks to the reluctant John Warner, John McCain, and Lindsay Graham, AND Colin Powell for good measure. They're not playing now - the ultimate adding-insult-to-injury situation. Which no doubt is already MOST upsetting to him - at a time when he NEEDS that blind loyalty to save his own ass from a really big problem. One that, I suspect, is a LOT bigger than Jim Baker's - OR bush-senior's ability to "fix."

So he's got a double bogey to face now. Not the place in which junior prefers to find himself.

Maybe he's in just a little too deep at this point. I'd probably be acting pretty damned agitated now, too.

The repugs get face time in front of a camera after the indictments to protest their innocence than back again to cry copiously after pleading guilty and heading off to Cell Block C.

...a more plausible explanation for Junior's increasingly erratic and petulant behavior can be found in something more obvious than fear of retribution for things he clearly does not regard as crimes. Instead, this is the one of the very, very few times in his life (childhood as much as adulthood) when responsible adults have told him "NO"...and what we're watching is his frustration and anger at not being allowed to have or do something he feels entitled to. As a personality, Junior is too much the narcissistic monomaniac to feel guilt or remorse; and he is quite convinced that he has nothing to fear from Congress, the media or the courts, in terms of being held accountable for his transgressions...and, given the obsequiousness of these institutions, rightfully so.
