A coalition of interest groups is calling on Rep. Shelley Moore Capito to explain her position on Social Security, but her campaign calls those efforts nothing more than a political ploy to help her Democratic opponent, Mike Callaghan.

West Virginians United For Social and Economic Justice, which includes the AFL-CIO, Citizen Action Group and others, asked members of Congress to sign its "Golden Promise" pledge to protect Social Security from privatization.

All four of West Virginia's Democratic members -- Sens. Robert C. Byrd and Jay Rockefeller and Reps. Alan Mollohan and Nick Rahall -- signed the pledge.

Capito did not, but her campaign insists that she is opposed to privatizing Social Security. West Virginians United held a press conference Tuesday to inform the public who signed its pledge.

"Our coalition decided to start informing the public and talking to congressional representatives who might have to vote on this," said Gary Zuckett, spokesman for West Virginians United and the WV Citizen Action Group. "We ask them to not privatize accounts and to strengthen the system as we know and like it.
