A new security measure for Baghdad: trenches and barbed wire
Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 11:25 AM by ProSense

Iraq to build trenches around Baghdad

1 hour, 19 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq has said it will dig trenches around Baghdad and seal off dozens of roads with access to the capital as a new security measure to restrict insurgent movements.

"As a new security measure, access to the capital will be permitted only through 28 roads," Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Abdel Karim Khalaf told AFP Friday, adding these roads will have new checkpoints.

Snip...

A massive Iraq and US security plan -- Operation Together Forward -- is already in place with more than 30,000 troops patrolling the capital's streets to restore stability.

Insurgents have however managed to carry out massive attacks in Baghdad despite the security crackdown.

Sectarian violence has also continued unabated, with more than 100 bullet-riddled bodies found on the streets of Baghdad in the past three days.

1. 'Fortress Bagdhad'
Of course, it's just a plan, far, far from reality. But still. A modern city reduced to that?
