I've got "mixed emotions" about Harold Ford Jr.
On the plus side, he's got a D behind his name. He's intelligent, good on his feet, well-spoken. He's obviously a skillful politician. On the other hand, he is almost as pro-war as *. I believe he supported the Patriot Act, and basically he sounds like a Publican. I know, I know. He's got to be centrist to win in a southern state like Tennessee. But I'm not sure I want to see him aspire any higher than the Senate.

For now, I'll take a Ford win to help the Dems re-take the Senate majority.

2. It's easy,
We'll vote for the (D). If you knew Corker like we know Corker, you'd vote for anybody but Corker, too.

10. Dunno Corker, but saw Wonkette's spotlight on his daughter..

3. I agree with you.
But my god, the guy's got a fire in his gut. When he made a run for Minority Leader back in '03, I thought "This guy is ballsy."

4. Oh he is a street fighter for sure.
This morning on Imus, he very smoothly (I was IMPRESSED) said he wasn't going to "go negative," but then Imus gave him an opening and Ford just shoved the knife in Corker's back. And smiled while he was doing it.

He's good.

5. I guess that's the trick to going negative.
You've got to do it as positively as possible.

It's hard to say "My opponent molests collies" positively, though.

13. My Opponent, Sir
Edited on Thu Sep-14-06 04:45 PM by The Magistrate
Loves dogs; no one would deny that, or that it is a great thing that he does. But he has been known, it is reported, to have pressed that love past normal bounds, into extremes that no decent human could be expected to tolerate in a public figure. He is going to have to do something soon to tamp down these rumors poisoning the campaign, and convince people he is in fact just a normal dog-lover, and put these charges to rest once and for all. A man who indulges in that sort of behavior is hardly fit for public office: most of us would surely agree with that.

"That sounds like a wager to me...."

14. That's a very good way to do it.
Ascribe the attack to someone else.

"Some say my opponent has unnatural relations with farm animals. That kind of attack is reprehensible. My opponent would never engage in unnatural relations with farm animals; everyone knows this. We must, in these contentious times, rise above such petty and false attacks."

I first read that story in Hunter Thompson's book about the '92 presidential campaign, Better than Sex.

politician and he would have lost my vote in perpetuity for his pro-war and eliminate the estate tax stands, among others, but look at what we've had with Dr. cat-lover Frist and will have with no amnesty Corker.

7. If Ford were running in Massachussetts, I'd be against him too.
He's running in Tennessee. I support him completely!

You do know, I assume, he was Kerry's 'co-campaign-chair' or some such title in the 94 race. You may not agree with all his positions, but he's a good, loyal Dem - more than can be said for *some* other pro-war former Dems we know.

He's an excellent Senate candidate, however.

11. Yep. Let's go with the plan to capture the Senate, too. And Ford's
not a bad politician at all.

Plus, Corker's a lunkhead.

15. All Politics Is Local
And there can be NO change at all unless those are DEMOCRATIC asses warming the seats.

First, we need to get our people elected. We really need to spare them the demands for ideological purity, particularly when adopting that sort of stance will ensure they go down in flames....
