Webb, Allen campaign gets down and dirty...
Charges of racism and misogyny fly....Allen is clearly on the ropes. Hang on to your hats, kiddies, this is going to get nasty.

The bullshit thing about this is that the Washington Post leads with Allen's charge, doesn't mention the Vets ads about body armor until much later in the article.

Va. Senate Race Goes Negative on 1979 Essay
Women Didn't Belong At Annapolis, Webb Said

-snip-

"It's probably a good time to break out the Disney tapes for the kids, because the TV ads aren't going to be pretty," said Charlie Cook, an independent political analyst who edits the Cook Political Report. "Both these guys will do whatever it takes to win. Nobody's going to hold anything back."

1. I read the excerpt from Webb's essay
and I have to say I agree with it. Women shouldn't be in combat situations. Men will do everything they can to protect them rather than concentrate on winning the battle. These are my own opinions; no flames please.

2. I don't agree with it...
and I think Webb was wrong. It's since been proven that women can handle themselves quite well in combat situations. However, in 1979 American women had not been in combat for the most part, and his thinking was very much in line with the vast majority of the men in military service.

If you read further into the article, it also mentions how Allen opposed allowing women into VMI, so I don't see how he takes the moral high ground here.

3. What makes you think men don't feel that way about their buddies?
Every soldier I know says in combat he was trying to protect his buddies.

Face it, women have been soldiers in every war this country has fought, usually in drag as young boys. Some were discovered and ejected, most were not.

If chivalry had a place in warfare, rape wouldn't be one of the prime weapons against civilians.

6. That makes one of us and I'd bet Webb does not think that way anymore
I've personally known a woman Navy LT from the Naval Academy. She was highly intelligent, attractive and moral beyond reproach. Women excel in Military Science and not all combat MOSs require brute strength. Some of the best pilots are ... ta da! = WOMEN! :patriot:

Remember - Divide and Conquer. ;)

4. A year ago, no one would have DREAMED this race would be close...
The very fact that the race is neck & neck is something no one would have dreamed of a year ago.

Allen is a pig.

Hopefully Democrats will e-mail Mr. Lambert and advise him how disappointed in him they are.

Mr. Allen evidently bought him off. (Everyone has a price, right?)

Go Webb!! ~~

5. It was written in the late seventies ...
Maybe Allen never amends his opinions, but I'm sure Jim Webb has changed to endorse the presence of Women, who often, excel within all Military Academies.

This is a pathetic and inane personal assault.

7. That's true..
and the article also mentions that Allen as a SENATOR opposed allowing women into VMI, until the Supreme Court said they had to.

What's the diff?

8. Did the pissant Allen really think the VMI thing would never come up?
Too funny.

I notice that Allen apologizing for the DECADES of admiration for the Confederate battle flag didn't make it into this story.
