Poll question: Will Dems Really Support Murtha's Bill To Fire Rumsfeld?
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 09:13 PM by MannyGoldstein
Rep. John Murtha, the ranking Democrat on the House panel on defense spending, introduced legislation today to urge Bush to fire Rumsfeld.

From Raw Story: "Secretary Rumsfeld has failed in managing the military response to this threat and should be replaced with someone who is capable of not only recognizing the mistakes that have been made but addressing them head on for the good of our military and our great nation," Murtha wrote in a post featured at Huffington Post.

Will the Congressional Democrats get behind Murtha's resolution?

1. They might do it this time. Few did when Kerry called for Rumsfeld's job
three times and even as the Dem nominee. You would think Abu Ghraib would have been enough incentive for them. But they couldn't even back their presidential candidate.

6. I voted "Other"
some will support it, some will try to "triangulate" it, a few will hide under the desk.

Given that several have already been calling for Rumsfailed to step down/be replaced, at least those will support Murtha's resolution.

10. "...they couldn't even back their presidential candidate."
That almost hurts to read, but it's the raw truth of the matter. While the GOP was co-oped and has undergone ruthless consolidation over the years, the Democratic Party has practically been dispersed into the wind during that same period.

13. Imagine if they all had formed squarely behind firing Rummy back then.
And had the courage to do it in front of tv cameras and microphones. Bush had no shortage of name GOPs showing up every day and night to support him - Giuliani, McCain, Dole - where were OUR name Dems throughout to show up and counter the lies? It was left mostly to those who little name recognition - Cleland and Clark showed up for duty...... again.

3. If they want to win this fall...
If the Dems want to win this fall they have to broadcast a cohesive message as to how they will alter the course of Iraq. Simply pulling our troops out of Baghdad will not be enough. The plan must attack how the US will return to Afghanistan to secure that country first, how they will deal with the Iranian nuclear threat along with North Korea and Iranian allies Hezbollah and Hamas. Being a friend to Israel is not good enough- a friend has to be able to tell another "Stop, you are going too far and need to pull back a little".

At the same time, the Dems should be attacking the GOP for their failed missteps in foreign policy after 9/11. The fact the people in power think they are above all others and omnipotent reinforces to belief abroad the US( see George W. Bush) are imperialistis and occupiers. We have to change this belief and return to some sense of normalcy in our foreign policy where we deal with all powers-even those we don't like or believe to be terrorists.

4. I'll believe it when I see it.
Moral courage is in horrifically SHORT SUPPLY these days in Congress. And I'm not talking just on one side of the aisle.

8. What has America come to?
When the Sec. of Defense admits to being a War Criminal and most of Congress can't even Impeach him America is in deep shit!

9. I Hope They Do. Big Time!
I'd love for all of the Congressional Democrats to have the fortitude of an FDR, Truman, or Feingold.

However given their past history... let's say I wouldn't bet my life on it. :-( -- but I'd love to be wrong.

11. If they DO manage to push it far enough, and Rummy IS ousted...
...who is in line for the position?
I've seen some talk around here about a major disaster blowing up on the horizon Lieberman wanting the position, but is there ANYONE?
I realize it's a bit much to expect a capable qualified candidate...
this administration's track record on that issue doesn't exactly shine. :sarcasm:

15. It's not legislation or a bill, as you've posted, it's a resolution
and it's designed to put Republicans on the spot, not Democrats. Of course, that won't stop some DUers from using it as a way to (pre-emptively) stoke the anti-Democratic Party flames that burn so brightly on this wonderful website...

I don't see any reason why Democrats wouldn't support this, and I expect the great majority of them will.
